I recently picked up a set of new to me wheels from another TW member. The wheels came off his 2018 SR and are supposed to be going on my 2006 OR.

I brought my truck in to my local shop this morning to have the new wheels installed. After pulling the old ones off and trying to put the new ones, they tell me that my wheel studs are too short and they can’t get the lugs snugged down tight to be safe. OK, I get that. I ask him if they could swap out to a longer wheel stud. They can’t or won’t do it and give me the run-around about eccentric hubs and I need to go 4WD shop to get this done. Sounds like he just doesn’t want to do the work.

My question – has anyone run into this before when swapping wheels between Gen’s? I’m not there to see the stud length issue, but could an 2006 OR have a shorter wheel stud than a sport or SR model?

Here is a pic of the new wheels for reference. I believe they are the stock TRD 2nd Gen Sport Wheel (or maybe a 4th Gen 4Runner wheel). I have the stock TRD 2nd Gen Off-Road Wheel (Part# 42611-AD031). It is my understanding that these wheels have the same offset and should be basically interchangeable.

    Thanks for the help.

What? Are you using the Toyota factory mag seat lugs with them? They thread into the wheels like 12 turns on oem wheels.

    They should fit.

I wonder if you have the wrong lug nuts on currently and just barely work but are more apparent in being too short with the newer wheels.

sanity check - you don’t have steel wheels currently and trying to use those lug nuts for the aluminum wheels, correct?

No, both the current wheels and new wheels are aluminum. The shop has never questioned the lug nut fit before and they have been doing my tire rotations for the past 10 years, but that is a good thought.

Pics of one of your current lug nuts removed from the truck would be a big help.

If your lugs look like this, they should work no problem. Anything else and they'll be incompatible.

A test would be to pull 1 lug off and see if the shank fits completely into the new wheels.

Pulled the lug nuts off my current OR wheels - see pics below. They look like the right ones. The shank from these also fits into the new wheels. Took a good 10-15 turns to get them off my wheels, so they are seated right. Not sure what the problem could be:annoyed:

Since these are an M12x1.5 stud 10 turns means you're grabbing 15mm of stud and which in my book is OK. If you're really going 15 turns then you're more than good.

Yep. They are super good on my current wheels. No idea why the other Sport Wheels won't fit with enough stud length. The new wheels are stamped 17x7.5JJ.

Should be a perfect fit then with the new wheels. Don't know what the tire shops deal was, especially since they're second gen wheels anyway lol.

If you have a jack, test fit one yourself to see if there are any possible issues.

If you're still not comfortable with it maybe just measure the thickness of the current wheel where the lug goes through it and the thickness of the new one in the same area. I feel like this is something being made of nothing.

1:1 is the rule so 12mm (8 turns) on an M12x1.50 stud is good to go.

Figured out what the problem was. The shop that was doing the work was being absolutely lazy and didn't feeling picking up the 50+ lb E rated tires to put them. I pulled the old wheels off this weekend and put on the new ones. They fit like they are supposed. Thanks for help keeping me sane on this one.

That was always what I was told. If it engages the diameter of the lug you're good.

Check the backside of the wheels you bought and check to see if there is an old spacer stuck to the backside of them. I know it's a long shot but you never know.
