Have 265/70/16 on a 2002 Tacoma. Have read stuff on this forum about not using any chains on the front, (I see why when I look behind the tire).

Are there any restriction on the type of chains I can use on the rear? Link chains have really done the job for me on other trucks in deep snow. Only thing that worked. Not looking for chains for highway driving. I see on the back inside of the rear wheels some fragile looking stuff near the axle, but it doesn't look like the chains should contact that.

Do you have your owners manual? It should have info on chain usage in there.

I don't have a manual to check, but I think it says chains are okay in the rear and not in the front.

That recommendation is assuming factory-spec wheels and tires. You already said you have 265/70r16, but aftermarket wheels can also complicate things. If you've deviated from factory spec, you'll have to use your judgment.

For whatever it's worth, I've run chains on all four wheels with 245/75r16 (same diameter as stock but 1" narrower) tires on 3rd gen 4runner 5-star rims on my 1998.
