I took this engine out of my dad’s truck, the engine has 100,000 miles and ran great but unfortunately his frame cracked from rust.

I was planning on doing an engine refresh, timing belt, water pump, valve cover gaskets etc and throw it into my Tacoma

How would you tackle all the rust on the outside of the engine?

I would strip the engine down ie motor mounts timing cover and belt and seal off any passages like the intake. Then I'd do foaming engine degreaser with a wire brush. Wash it off and use compressed air to blow the water and remaining rust off.

Leave it sealed up and have it shot blasted. Then do all of the work on it afterwards.

All good ideas for sure! I took mine to a friend who has a shot blaster. Sealed all important areas up of course. That's my recommendation as well.
