    Giant maple landed across it
Last week at 2:08 a storm caused two very large maple trees to fall simultaneously across the bed and cab of my 2009 2.7l 4x4 standard cab. As well flattening my girlfriend's son's Ford ranger and several damaging her car and the frontend of my 5th wheel. Had it fallen A few feet to the right one or all of us could have been killed. None of us have comprehensive coverage.
I rent space on this property and have told the owners of a tree falling nearly hitting my trailer last year. They haven't responded to this incident yet..
My question is, at first glance you think there is no way the truck could be salvaged! And maybe it can't..Its taken me all week to clear the debris today put it in neutral and rolled it back a few feet no problem can't get the hood open yet so I haven't tried starting . I can see that the radiator is damaged and guessing there's more damage under the hood. But sighting down the length of truck the wheels appear to be sitting ok and in line?
Is it possible to take such an impact to (see pics) do this kind of damage to the body yet everything under be ok? And if so how hard would it be to replace the cab? And the cheapest... Or should I just part it out....I've owned this truck for 14 yrs and I realize it's what I deserve for not having the insurance.
UPDATE pulled cab out enough to sit in and shut the doors..except for radiator and fan shroud needing replaced, it runs and drives fine! I'm wondering if I can just cut the top off and weld another on! And in the mean time drive it legally with goggles on? I live in a remote area with no way to make it to work right now.. So I'm willing to take the imbarrassment if I can do it legally.

That sucks. Without comprehensive coverage from insurance you’re kinda screwed at first glance. If it’s just cab damage it’s definitely fixable if you’re willing to do the work and have the tools/equipment to do it.

Welcome to TW! If it were mine, I’d part out what I could, there’s a strong market for Tacoma parts and scrap the rest. To try and fix it you’d have way more money in it than it’s worth.

Maybe find one with a rotted (that is if there’s no frame damage on your) frame but either way is going to be a lot of work. That thing is crushed, disassemble it and see what you have to work with. I wish you the best of luck with the outcome.
I’m glad all of you are ok. The true act of God was sparing you all from injury.

Glad to hear you and yours are all ok. Stating the obvious; this was no fault of your own. Either with or without insurance, no one 'deserves' to have this happen to them - period. As has been mentioned in previous posts, your best bet is to salvage what you can and scrap the rest. I scaled back my insurance years ago and I had the least amount of full coverage required by law in NC. I only carry necessary limits of both liability and comp. Be well and all the best going forward - it's a lot to have to bare.

Thanks for responding and the advise.i managed to pull the cab out enough to sit in it and close the doors. Removed the windshield and shroud around fan the radiator needs replaced but still holdS coolant with small leak at the top.. engine and drive train seems to be fine. If was suggested I cut the top off and replace with one I may find at junk yard instead of attempting a full can replacement.. What do you think about this? In the mean time I'm wondering if I can drive it legally with out the windshield and looking like I just was in a roll over accident? Lol not really a "lol" time. I'm unable to work now. It was my only transportation and I worked out of my truck. No other means to find another rig at this time.

Hi thanks, so amazingly motor is fine except radiator leaks at top... Frame seems straight. I pulled the cab out enough to sit in. Removed the glass. I'm wondering how hard it would be to cut just the top off and weld another on? And can I drive it now with Google's on!

The issue with chopping the top and welding another on is that it won't be safe for an accident. Odds of it being legal are a toss up depending on your state and local laws.

Such a bummer that this happened. I'm sorry you are dealing with this.

I don't mean this as any kind of a dig or insult, but I learned something from a friend years back that stuck with me. I was of the mind that if I didn't have a payment on a vehicle I dropped the insurance to liability to "save money." He asked what I would do if my car was totaled today. What was my plan? How would I manage in that scenario? I didn't have an answer. He said "if you can't walk out and easily replace it tomorrow you should have full coverage on it." It stuck, and even though I had to scrape and scrounge to get it started, I have carried full coverage ever since.

I know it's not super helpful right now, in the moment, but it is something to work toward to protect yourself should this kind of thing happen again. I really really hope it doesn't.
