I wish I'd thought to take photos during disassembly to show that process. This is where I'm presently at with things.

I'm waiting on some lapping compound to be delivered to reseat the valves. They're mostly okay, but figured I should be neurotic about that so I don't have to mess with the top half of the engine again anytime soon.

158k. Heat shield is held on by 4 10mm bolts...take the air box and pipe off for tool access, pop it off and take a look for cracks. I got a new Dorman one from autozone for $150 thru a commercial account. Would prefer a Toyota one, but considering I'm doing this rebuild on a budget, it's a slap together job to get my work truck back up and running. Not even machining the block and head; tested for parallelism and flatness and it's close enough (1/10000th out of spec on parallelism. 2/10000 out of spec on flatness).

Valve spring and seal removal (quick and dirty)

    20241103-173504_15311e97f49ba0f007aff9328214c6e86dd9c053.jpg 20241103-173439_9d891af1fa96bdd573b7832fe0a943dc8bfdd835.jpg

17mm socket on extension, set straight on valve spring and give it a good whack with the hammer. Pops the keepers right off.

Gripping valve seals by the metal jackets with a pair of pliers that don't make contact with the valve stems, wiggle it back and forth while pulling up with just a little pressure. Takes about 3 seconds per seal.

Prior owner is a good-hearted dude, but not working with much in his noggin. Sold it to me for $300 at 147k due to the blown head gasket and dead cylinder. It still ran, so I've used it in that condition as my work truck the last 4 years until it finally stopped running. Low compression turned into no compression a couple days ago.
