Today I was doing oil change, and broke the filter housing, its a small leak from it when engine is running. It was so overtightened , took me a while to get it off, drill was barely able to get it off. 2 oil changes that my truck had were done at dealership, since it was free... Not sure why they tightened it as if someone would try to steal it or something.

Should I be checking something else? I will replace it and also use new filter again. Will never have my oil change done at dealership ever again whether its free or not.

Are you sure the large O ring is seated properly? Not at the base but in the groove just above the base? May not be a cracked housing.

I change my own oil and the filter is always a little harder to get off than I think it should be.

I keep a replacement housing on standby just in case

    therein lies the problem
Wiseman say "nothing is free, everything comes at a cost"
To make it worse, the "free" oil changes were baked in to the cost of good sold,,, the dealers just up their margins by paying "lubers" to do a tech's job.

Keep an 18-in or 2 ft breaker bar. The advantage of a breaker bar is that you can tap on the 18 in or 2 ft end lightly and slowly turn the filter with greater amounts of controlled torque instead of several possibly destructive "impacts".

+1. i always tighten mine fully necking up on the ratchet. but i always need a breaker bar to get it off. i always oil the o-rings before hand, but suspect some of the 'broken' stories are from non-oiled o-rings.

i'm still using two composite filter housings, but i alternate for each oil change so i can have the next filter/housing prepped and ready before dropping the in-use one.

Yep, I did use breaker bar but it was just so over torqued and tight that I could get it off, i was scared to break it ( irony )... So I used the drill on low torque and it was not enough even. I am so pissed now, and the drain bolt? the ring that is literally stuck on the drain, it didnt come off, just bolt did.

Yes, I wish that was the problem but I seated just where it needs to go, not all the way down. And is the aluminum reliable? it is OEM but still. You guys use it? I dont think I need it since plastic would just be fine if the morons at toyota dealership didnt fk it up..

I do have 5 extra filters, but I didnt think i would need the housing..

Try a chisel or paint scraper with oil-cleaner/dissolver.

I am worried enough about the plastic housing breaking that a "spare" will be part of my purchase set for the next change (very soon so I need to get off my lazy ass).

I dont even want to go down to the parts department. The dude i met today didnt even know what oil filters were going for any cars. " I am not familiar with toyota and engines " must have been good thing to put down on resume as someone who works in parts store.

The metal one from AMZ will take forever to arrive seems like, so Ill prob get plastic one for now, and maybe install the metal one on next oil change. Wasted oil too, i will change it again with new one, dont want to reuse it.

At least it seems a slow leak instead of catastrophic break. "Fools never learn, smart people learn from their own mistakes, wise people learn from the mistakes of others".

Yea, if I didn't use UV flashlight i wouldnt even notice it.. I wont drive it thought still, i dont want it to get worse, ill change it tomorrow.

For sure i am skipping whatever "free" factory maintenance my truck has at dealership, never again.

Fumoto oil drain valve that allows controlled drain, or taking samples for oil testing if you are into that thing: https://www.fumotousa.com/all-products.html?filter[attribute][418][139]=139

Just a suggestion, a length of copper or metal tubing, 2', 3' 4' slipped over ratchet handle makes a good and cheap emergency breaker bar. The longer the length, the more leverage.

Do you guys know what's the OEM drain plug bolt + ring part number? Might as well get that, but not sure how i am getting that ring off, it seemed pretty glued.

I would highly recommend the motivx kit on Amazon as well. I use a fumoto short nipple valve, which works great with the motivx kit as well. The full kit includes a filter drain and a housing wrench
