IMG_2726.jpg Should I be worried about my timing belt? What is the worst case if its non-interference? Is it hard to change myself?

    1. Yes you should be worried
    2. You're stranded in the middle of nowhere waiting for a tow truck, or worse, offroad
    3. It's not too hard but it is time consuming and requires a special tool to remove the crank pulley IIRC. You'll also want to replace the water pump. There are kits available for a couple hundred $$s

Yikes. I've replaced a few 5VZ-FE timing belts well after the 90k interval had passed but never saw one as cracked as yours. At the very least make sure you've got AAA, because if that thing pops you're not going anywhere for a while.

It's not only miles that matter but also age of the belt. Based on the pic looks like it could be well over 5 years old and like others said, could leave you stranded.

It's likely original so 23 years will do that.

It is interference. Do it now, or have it done now. Probably about $500 to 600 job if you have a shop do it.

I just had my 4th timing belt done (I'm at 410k now). I make sure I do them at each 100k for the reasons stated above in previous posts. I just don't want to be out somewhere and have it o out. I also do the water pump at the same time, and look at all the hoses, etc. If your belt looks like that, perhaps also look at your hoses if they haven't been changed.

    good catch
If outside portion of belt show those cracks….need RR’d ASAP

as far as “hard to do?”…….difficulty wise….
    Changing alternator is a 2
T belt change is a 4 to 7 depending on your experience

if you don’t get all timing marks inline….could be a long couple days

Unk exact amt of marks on a 5VZ….but my Subaru has 12 freaking T marks …PITA

check out some vids and see if you want to tackle
Always lots of help here u decide to accomplish
    GL and Welcome!!!!!
