I bought my neighbors 2000 Ranger (B3000) that he bought new. I drove it to 170,000 miles before it was totaled. It was still going strong too

Mine ran well at that mileage too but still crapped out within a few more years. One was an ‘89 2.9l V6 and the other was a ‘99 4.0. Plus the 4.0 tranny failed at only 60k. I think you were lucky to get rid of them soon enough.

It’s not that I didn’t like owning them but I just don’t trust the brand to the same degree. I’m at 150k now on my ‘14 taco and I’d not be surprised to still be driving it 10 more years from now.

    Hm, interesting.

My engine burned no oil which was a good sign, it also didnt have the dreaded timing chain rattle during start up. That freaking SOHC had 3 timing chains haha. It was an afterthought on the old OHV 4.0, crazy design.

I had a manual transmission so I think thats why it didnt really give me issues, I did hear stories on ATs failing prematurely yes.

For the most part the 2.3, 3.0 and the 4.0 were very reliable engines. Especially that 2.3

Man, you have got one of best Toyota engines ever made :) I think you will be fine for way longer than that, as long as rust doesnt take over.

Living on the coast in NorCal rust isn’t an issue, the frame and body are still like new(other than the usual collection of dings). There are still tons of first gens and even plenty of earlier models roaming around. I’ve seen them beat to snot but many still look great. No garage or carport either, out in it 24/7/365. Might be different if the paint got chewed off road or up in the snow but this ones a low altitude pavement pounder.

    Right on.

I do some rust prevention on my truck so hopefully it will last me for another 20+ years.

Im up north so to see a 1st gen is rare :) Tons of 2nd and 3rd Gens though. Very few 4Gs, dont think its going too well for the current tacoma. At least up here anyway.
