If your a fabricator I bet you own a tape measure, or 20 of them. Find one, pull the coilover and start cycling

Can you list some of these "many" virtues? The only benefits of a db lift is the ability to fit larger tires with less work and retaining factory geometry.

The bump stops need to be alot lower thats why there is so much unimpeded up travel

Tell you what, I'll give you the benefit. You indeed will have more available wheel travel. Not all of it will be able to be used due to cv axles and ball joints binding. This leads to still having the same travel numbers as a factory truck.

I stopped reading the replies. Seems a convoluted mess. How is it misread when it is clearly stated?

“barring some sort of mechanical interference like control arms hitting something else.”

That right there. The whole point of posting was to get feedback on how much travel is capable with a drop bracket lift. I mentioned several times I was concerned about CV angles. Someone else mentioned ball joint angles, which is a good point.

Some people just like looking for a chance to argue though. Not me. Cheers.

Retaining the factory geometry of course is the biggest benefit (maybe you wouldn't agree that is better than replacing CV boots, steering racks & ball joints and putting up with a poor ride because your control arms are pushed down to a steep angle and have little or no downtravel left? Or foregoing the lift and getting hung up on your undercarriage or bashing/ripping off your bumpers depending where it is you go offroad?),
Fitting bigger tires is usually why most people want a lift. But as some correctly point out, a typical shock lift that doesn't also lower the LCAs and axle housing isn't going to allow fitting tires any bigger than you can on a stock suspension.
Beefier knuckles also are usually part of a DB kit too.

I certainly agree that not everyone needs more than a 2" or 2.5" lift, but there is a place for them for those that do (rock crawling is a good example, the added undercarriage (belly) clearance helps us West-coasters get over & around big boulders and ditches a lot easier). Yet 2-3× a week it seems someone posts on here about a 4", 5" 6" lift, only to be immediately shot down without any inquiring where they intend to go with it: "Bigger lifts cause problems, It'll handle like crap, you'll tip over, it won't stay aligned, the brackets will bend, you have to cut your frame" (of which only that last one is necessarily true and can't be avoided)...

I missed this one on the last go-around...
The drop brackets don't drop 6", they drop more around 4" (the latter 2" of a 6" lift comes via the shocks, much like how a 2" lift is on a non-DB setup).

If we're gonna talk about MY personal experience, I haven't torn a single boot....broke axles sure, but boots? No. Steering racks? I've been through 3 but that's solely due to the fact I'm running larger tires and has nothing to do with the lift I'm running. No issues since changing to a beefier rack.

My current setup rides better and has more down travel than a db setup I've ran on a previous truck

That's the whole reason I have Armor and full skids? Idk I feel like that pretty much goes hand in hand with rock crawling. You're gonna break shit. Pay to play.

This I disagree. While yes there's a place for drop brackets it's not in the rocks. Street/show/mud trucks sure.

I have nothing against db lifts, never have. Like i said, ive ran db lifts in the past. My current suspension setup of at most 2" of lift blows my 4runners db lift out the water when it comes to the rocks. I've got more useable travel and a lower cog. I'd much rather drag belly than roll :notsure:. To each their own.

Get some measurements/pictures/videos and report back with your findings. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.

Earlier this summer I made the (potentially risky) decision to run Gold Mountain Trail here in Big Bear Calif with a friend while still having the stock plastic (decorative) bumpers and no fuel tank skid... As it turned out, the trail ended up being no problem for me (I have a heavily modified RC 4" kit w/34" tires, set for about 5" lift), but another fellow I met on the trail running 2" lift couldn't make it over the first climb because he would drag his frame against a rock face (I had to strap him over it). There were more times after that he had to try a different line because he didn't have the clearance (good thing he did have sliders & skids though). The only thing I had happen was putting several dings on the edge of my wheels (which I went into it figuring that would happen anyway) and of course giving my front skids a workout. Not sure how you can say to that that the lift was not benefiting...
Each of my past rigs also have had 4" to 6" lift, so it's not like this is my first rodeo.

But like you said, to each their own. Maybe your 4Runner's lift just needed a bit more dialing it in (mine certainly did... But it's great now that I gusseted things and put Fox on all 4 corners and dialed in the travel on it).

Sounds like some lockers would've been more beneficial

I do have lockers (so did he). It was quite clearly a lack of clearance issue.

I see you're in Hawaii, maybe the rocks where you are are different... Here they sometimes can be Volkswagen-sized that you have to drive over.

I'm from Hawaii yes, lived on the East coast for 10 years. Wheeled everywhere from WV, TN, PA, as well as in the deep river beds of Hawaii. Let me know if youre ever in the 808, I'll take you down some trails

Ok cool, you got some good action available where you are too. Nice video BTW, is one of those rigs you? Quite clearly none of them are running 2" lift though (and have solid axle swaps), so I'm not sure how that supports your argument here.

Not a single DB either, wild. It was more so to show you we don't have "different" (small) rocks here.

Alright, I'm out till we get some travel numbers :hattip:
