I have a 2001 Tacoma rwd 4 cyl(2.5) with under 140k miles. While I was skeptical going to look at the car it was very blatant this was sold out of desparation. The truck seems to run flawless after a pcv and maf cleaning. Does anybody have experience with idling under 500 rpm smoothly? I see no rough vibrations and religiously run pure 87. Throttle seems responsive aswell so I'm uncertain if throttle cable is even close to needing an adjustment. Any input is appreciated‼️ I'm just wondering if I'm paranoid or if it's a gem.

Shocking that it doesn't vibrate under speeds that low. Spec is generally 700ish. It will probably throw codes before long...

    As far as your idle
Good job with PCV and cleaning MAF!

Hell if no codes and good throttle response….drive!

If it's not threatening to lug itself into a stall, then I wouldn't be worrying.

Is it possible the tac is inaccurate? Or are you verifying the RPM via OBDII?

Because I would think that low of RPM would signify a problem and it wouldn't run great

500 is low and it's almost always a vacuum leak or a few tiny ones that will cause it. But I would verify via ODB what RPM the ECU is reading. If in doubt...put a smoker on it.

Haven't ran codes but it seems very accurate. I'm certain the engine light works as it popped right after cleaning the components listed prior. It cranks at about 1k or less in the cold and slowly idles down to 450-475rpm at full temp.

Will definitely check obd for confirmation and a leak down test will definitely be before or after

That is wildly low, you don't get crazy vibrations when stopped in gear at operating temp?

I've been chasing an idle around 600 and can hear a vac leak somewhere. I would start easy and go more complicated. My IAC is also giving me issues when it gets up to temp (old and dirty).

I honestly only feel rough idle between 500 and 600 and with the heat on 2 it seems to have a common idle range(700+rpm) . I'm gonna buy a vacuum line kit for all the curvy lines near the vacuum box just to hopefully avoid the magnifying glass. Shifts low rpm aswell if that adds to any reason anyone would know of. The discontinued hoses in the commonly listed kits are able to be replaced with basic lines but I only see concern over things like not knowing where the oil pump begins to become efficient(likely 600+). My only reason to fix is this forums responses and the rpm I see in front of me. It never stalls, nor shows signs of bad issues or rough idle(unless im barely on the gas around 5 or 6 with no ac or heat) so vacuums are treated within the next week or so. Prayers up thank you guys and happy holidays!!

If it’s not lugging/vibrating at <500 rpm then your tachometer is off. Anything at or under 600rpm should be felt. Verify the rpm with an obd II reader. Normal warmed up idle is around 700/750

So I never ended up trying to smoker test it. Because every single line is properly secure and checked by hand without any visible leaks or holes anywhere. The intake fittings are also very sturdy. Im gonna change out the air filter and Ive noticed the throttle is not as responsive as I first thought. I read somewhere that spec was only a few mms of play before throttle opens with the cable and I'd confidently say im at 5+mm of slack before any result of the tb opening. Should i adjust my throttle cable? I dont see any difference made unless i exceed spec in the opposite direction.

Cam, Tacomas never had a 2.5l motor.
Adjust your throttle free play and if she is an automatic check the TV cable while you are there too.
Take the air tube off of the throttle body and looke at the bore, is it clean or gummed up?
