Yeah, negative reinforcement doesn't really work with Shibas. Neither do invisible fences. Our last place wasn't fenced, so we tried the one that creates a "bubble" they have to stay within. It has a safety feature where it will only shock for 30 seconds if they don't come back inside the bubble. Well, Kojun was in love with one of the dogs next door. He would creep up on the boundary until it started shocking him, then sit for 30 seconds until the shocking stopped. You could see him jerk each time it shocked him. Once it stopped, he'd bolt for their back door and bug the neighbor until they let him in or let their dog out. We had it set on the highest setting using the long probes. I think he's brain damaged now.

Update on Tessa and the food problem. I ordered a new slow feed bowl that is wider, has a lower profile, and is elevated. It took a couple of days while on our trip to Tennessee to get used to it (and car rides and dog parks and ...). She is eating from it without issue.

Somehow, that’s not surprising to hear the invisible fence didn’t work lol. Maybe he acts like it for special treatment. I know our last one would fake injuries to get treats


Next week is her second DHPP, so the. We’ll be able to start socializing her with other dogs. So far, she loves people and we’re taking her in the car for a couple trips each day. I’m hoping some of the things we did “wrong” with the last one, we learned from. Or at least make her not as Shiba weary/aloof to other people.

If all goes well, we’re going to plan a trip to Maine next summer and take her with us. My wife said that it’s very pet friendly up there.
