Hello, I am about to install a 6112 / 5100 to my 21 Tacoma OR and I am going to install them myself. However, I purchased non assembled bilstein 6112 shocks as I was just gonna have a shop compress them but I saw this video where he doesn’t even compress the spring?? He just puts it right in with the height he wanted on the shock with no compression. Is there anything wrong with not having it assembled/compressed while it’s in place on the truck?

    Here is the video
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=a9N1fvbGAEw (He does it at 2:07)

let me know if I can do this without it affecting anything long term

I didn't watch the vid, but it sounds like the jack method. If so, that's how I did mine. Not sure if 6112s support from an assembly perspective, but 5100s definitely do.

    No energy to risk.

I didn’t watch the video either, but I have heard of the jack method tonered refers too. Unless I am mistaken, both involve compressing the spring. One uses a special tool called a spring compressor and the other uses a jack combined with the truck’s weight. I think it’s up to what you are comfortable with.

CAVEAT: can you buy 6112 shocks unassembled? I’ve only seen them assembled. They might not work with stock coil springs like the 5100 does. I have no personal experience with them.
