I have a 2008 Tacoma that I just put 285/70/17’s on. I don’t rock crawl and only tow 4-5 times a year. What gears would be best for mileage and towing?

4.10 would put you back to factory “rpm”.
4.30 would be the next step up.
    Followed by 4.56.

I think the 4.0 would have been better if it were set behind a 4.10 from the factory.
So, in your situation a 4.30 would be ideal.

4.56 isn’t bad either. But you’ll be turning some rpm if you ever go back to a smaller tire.

I have a 4.0 engine. With 4.30 gears any idea what my rpm would be at 80 mph with 285/70/17’s?

Around 2100 @ 65 mph in 5th with the Automatic.

You can to the link below and and play around with different gear ratios.
    http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html

Select the right data from the drop down list.
The Transfer Case is the same for Manual and Automatic. Select the “Toyota Tacoma and FJ” option.
If you have an Auto, choose the A750.
If you have the manual, it’s the RA60F

Then type in the gear ratio and tire size.

Garbage in garbage out. That means when you put garbage information in you will get garbage information out.

just like if you put half ass effort into training, sleep, and nutrition, you will not have results.

maybe you can try specifying information relevant to your vehicle. To obtain resulting information. Such as if it is manual or automatic. Which is most vehicles. Which are very different in ratios and number of gears.

if you work on cars for a living and put garbage information into a tech support request, you will at minimum get garbage out resulting information or more than likely, slapped the shit out of by everyone around you.

a transmission is one of the largest components of a vehicle and part of moving forward.
