This is my second time posting about frame rust. I’m in the market for a 1st gen Tacoma, I’ve found one for a good price and I want to get your guys opinion on the frame before I buy it. I’m new here so please let me know what you think before I jump the gun. It is an east coast truck so I’ll be posting pics now. Please let me know if you see any discrepancies. Thanks- Nathan

On initial look, it looks good. But notice some of the little tell tale rust spots, and they make me suspicious that this frame was painted over. It looks suspiciously clean and black.

    Gonna require the hammer test

the dealer said it was probably not the original frame, does this seem sketchy?

Get it checked out at an independent mechanic. Tell them your concern and ask to take a particularly close look at the frame (in addition to everything else).

    No
No, not necessarily. Many trucks got free frame replacements from Toyota. Unfortunately most owners neglected those frames as bad as they did their first, so many of those are rotted out now too

Can't tell if it is painted or coated but there is something on it. I'd want to see it in person. the smoothness suggests it's not badly corroded. I'd tap around on it if you can and stick finger in holes of frame to feel for internal corrosion. Shine a light in there too to see if it is smooth or flaky corroded. New frame is no big deal. Thousands got them. If you go with it treat it with waxoyl or fluid film inside and out.

this photo you posted has me concerned. It look like it has rust that's been painted over. What does everyone else thiink? That big line running horizontal looks suspicious to me.IMG_0931.jpg

Yea I agree that looks suspect. The overall picture quality is kinda poor though, so hard to say.

RUN… where is the fuel tank skid plate? cab mount gusset has hole rusted through, seam weld on right frame blistered, hose clamp on exhaust, what was that holding? and yes rattle can bumper coating everywhere, doubt it will pass ping test.
