I have a 01 Toyota w/ 3.4 yesterday I changed valve cover gaskets and believed that everything went as expected until I turned the key and it just spun over for awhile when it finally started it ran terrible so I turned the key off I waited about 15 minutes and then tried to start the truck again but all it would do is turn over please any advise would be appreciated

It sounds like you forgot to reconnect something. Or are you sure you didn’t drop something down into the cylinders?

Yes sir I kept the cylinders well covered and made sure nothing was on the motor before I removed the material I had covering the cylinders and installed the lower section of thair chamber. This morning I got it to start but it would only run a minute and die

Is it throwing any codes? It really sounds to me like something didn’t get reconnected. I don’t think you could have messed up the timing by doing the valve covers. All the plugs are torqued to spec, ignition wires on the right cylinders?

if it won't run, it likely won't be able to generate a check engine code. i believe it's possible to look at diagnostic information, but that would require a $1k+ diagnostic scanner, not just a code reader.

i would specifically be checking the spark plug wires. it almost sounds like either some aren't connected(in, but not fully clicked in--i would go around and physically disconnect and reconnect every one), or a at least two got swapped during the process.

A update on my Tacoma that would not start, so I triple checked all of my work and found everything showed to be correct, so I started checking what other parts it could be I removed the fuel filter and found the fuel was dirty so I drained the tank and replaced the filter and tried to start the truck it turned over a lot smoother but the only way to make it start is to hold the gas peddle to the floor and it will start once it start you see dark grey smoke out the tail pipe and it idles at around 1300 rpm’s and stays on 1300 without coming down. My truck has never smoked nor has it stayed at 1300 while idling I am thinking maybe fuel pressure regulator but not sure about the smoke any advise will be appreciated
