3rd does not fully lockup the converter in 3rd.
The full lockup is control via a code rather some settings in the table(s)

3rd gen has 3 phases of the tc state:
    -unlocked
    -partial locked.
    -fully locked.

We drive in Unlocked state until tranny fluid gets to 90-100 degree F.

Tunes are able to control unlock and partial lock states via available tables. In 3rd gear TC does not get full lockup, that's is why you see excessive heat .

Here is Toyota description of Fully lockup state

@Vlady got it, the wording had me confused. I didn't realize it did even partial lockup in 3rd but I did realize that any level of unlocked results in heat. Thanks!

I have 5.29s on 35s and it does pretty well most of the time towing my 3,500 lb trailer. It would just avoid building up heat if it would lock up in 3rd gear when it needs it to maintain speed while towing up a long steep grade. What are the downsides to programing the torque converter to lock up in 3rd gear if it could even be done?

I pulled the trigger on the OTT tune this week to try and eliminate some of the gear hunting issues I have on my 2023 Tacoma AT. I went with Lite/Mild as I am not looking for super sensitive response and I'm not a very aggressive driver. During the test drive it felt great and seemed to have very smooth acceleration response. Within a day or two I have noticed a very unpredictable pedal response especially at low speeds. Has anyone experienced this? Prior to the OTT tune the response was delayed but predictable. Now sometimes the response is very quick and smooth and other times it feels like when I step on the gas it revs almost like I'm in neutral for a split second (the RPMs increase but not super quickly). I'm not sure whether I should have them reprogram to mild/medium or just have them remove the tune completely. Part of me feels like a slower but more predictable pedal response is better for me.

If you haven’t already, have your trans fluid level checked and topped off. (I know, I know, it’s a 2023.) We’ve had a great number of trucks come off the line not properly filled causing this exact issue. There are threads and YT videos on just this.

My 2023 was jerking from a stop on Lite about half of the time. I got the tools to check the ATF and did it myself. It ate 1qt and spat out 1/2 a qt on the overfill and it immediately fixed it. It coasts better too.

Apologies if this has been answered but the search function didn’t bring anything up. I’m in a 3rd gen 2GR-FKS, got the tune early September. Late October I absentmindedly disco’d the battery for a couple of hours to install a switch panel. Did I lose the tune?

22 TRD OR DCSB 6MT - OTT tune MILD - tuned at ~14,700miles

First off, Barrett and @JustDSM are super solid and awesome dudes! I was speaking with my tuner prior ro this event but did not realize I needed to ensure that I was scheduled in at a specific time. Showed up to the tuning event and it was super super busy. Had no idea Justin would be there and he squeezed me in and tuned me himself (not part of his normal protocol).

Initial thoughts: Mild is a massive improvement on throttle sensitivity and requires a slight relearn on shifting again as I immediately began overrevving it lol Couple blocks later I got the hang of it. Immediately noticed that the truck got up to speed off the line way faster with the same previous input; very happy with this. Since Saturday, I have put on about ~200 miles since the tune and have noticed that 1st to 2nd shifting is way smoother! In fact, upshifting and down shifting in any gear has significantly improved in smoothness. I did the clutch ADM in July, which has mostly made things more consistent than stock and somewhat smoother shifts, but still pretty rough between 1-2 and no improvement on downshifts. The OTT tune has bridged the gap on those shifts making this truck feel like a TRUCK and not grandpas old deisel tractor on the road. I'm not sure how this is achieved, but it is one of the most major noticeable differences. Modulating the gas in first gear at low speeds has significantly improved. Shifting down from 2nd to 1st is basically butter now. I can confidently press on the pedal and demand power when cruising in almost any gear (within reason, you can still bog any engine when too low in rpms in any manual, despite any tune).

In summary, I am super stoked about the OTT tune and the future of actually ENJOYING driving this truck. Justin, Barrett and the entire OTT team are wizards in their own right! I am somewhat curious as to what the Medium tune would feel like, but Mild is 100% enough of a game changer on the throttle sensitivity to make one happy with the way the truck drives! Viva a la OTT!

Considering tuning here in the near future. Is there an option to DIY the flash or do I have to go through a local tuner? I like having the option to change tunes on my own or return things to stock if I need at any point.

@JustDSM I was looking to see if VFTuners was having a black friday deal when I noticed they no longer list the GX470 on the support page. What are my options now?

    Edit: I just noticed it says GX460 2006 - 2018, but the GX460 came out in 2010. Must be a typo. ...

Edit 2: Just scrolled up and saw you guys expanded the range of supported vehicles. What hardware do you use for the GX470?
