Hey guys, quick question, just looking for a ballpark idea or someone to say, “do it” or “no way.”

I have a 2017 TRD Pro in Barcelona Red w/ a MT and 108K on the Odo. When I bought the truck, it was a great deal. I think? Paid $33K w/ 60,000 miles. I jumped at it because at the time, it was only priced about $1,500 more than the equivalent sport / TRD OR. My ONLY gripe w/ the vehicle is the short bed. At the time I was going on my second full summer of having driven out to MT for two months to fish. At the time, I was still tent camping and didn’t really consider building out the bed to sleep in with my (now) wife. This past summer, we completed out 4th trip. Both teachers without kids, so we spend our summers out west. This summer we had a significant grizzly event in our tent - long story short, he stuck his head in, and that was enough for my wife to never sleep in a tent out there again. We finished out the trip sleeping in the bed on a platform I’d made, but w/ me being 6’2 and her 5’7, it was tight. Really tight, and really uncomfortable. I’ve since been camping in the truck a bit more for bike trips, fishing trips, etc. It’s fine for just me for a night or two, but it’s just not going to work for two people. When I bought the vehicle, I financed it at a longer term than I should have - hind sight is 2020. However, I’m aggressively paying it off now, and it should be completely paid off within 14mos.

I’ve been getting texts about trading it in from the dealership for a 2024 - not doing that as it’s just not worth it to me, and I’d rather have no car payment than drive a newer truck. I’m considering looking to trade it in for a 3rd gen OR Long Bed if I can find a lower or equal mileage vehicle for a marginally higher value than the trade is worth, but it comes down to the trade value. I’ve seen a wide range of values and have no idea where I sit. I also would hate to give up the MT.

So, this is a long winded way of asking a.) what can I expect on a trade? B.) should I pay it off, wait a few years for the 4th gen to calm down? Or C.) should I just cut my losses and move onto the idea of a RTT?

And yes, I somewhat expect to get flamed for being hasty, but live and learn.

The difference you'll likely lose on a trade should pay for a RTT and rack

That was my thought. My only issue with a RTT is that I have a fly rod vault on the rails of my cap that I would like to keep, but I do not think I'll be able to find a RTT to fit in the remaining space.

You think an rtt is going to save you from a grizzly with bad intentions? :)

    I suggest Option "C".

Here's a TRD Pro with RTT...to help keep those pesky Grizzlies away. lol

Hey, my rate isn't that bad. But, even now, it's not always bad. The liquid cash I saved (and funneled into investments) taking out a loan has returned significantly more than I will have paid in interest over the term. That's not including the interest I won't be paying by paying it off early. I see this a fair bit on here - "pay cash, and if you can't, don't buy." Credit cards? Frivolous things? Of course - stupid. Homes? Cars? Not always the case.

Ever thought about a small camper trailer? I have a 5x8 off-road camper that I drag when the Mrs is with. Keeps the bed available for cargo, if you're staying in one area for a few days it can be a base camp that you don't have to pack up every day if you're driving around the area.

A few, mainly added skids. I like leaving the suspension alone. I drive forest service dirt roafs in the desert west extremely extremely too fast. Toyota nailed this suspension going 65 across desert terrain. Changing it is dumb unless you have a specific need like crawling or mud.

I'm with this guy. If you can afford a good trailer with an articulating hitch. I'm stuck at RTT but will probably move on to small trailer soon. RTT is an improvement over bed, but trailer still wins in my opinion.

But none of these three options will help with your fear of another bear encounter. and they all have a plus or minus. Truly keeping your gear stored at least 15 feet from where you sleep is best. Unfortunately our gear tends to be near us. It's not just food. Old boots and dirty jeans can be all it takes. If you were in Montana ya. I'd say about every trip I see a bear so that's normal, and attack is not.

    Be the calm rational one.

Blah, don’t stress it. There’s always the “I pay cash for all things because I’m projecting how awesome I am” in any thread like this. It’s projection, at best.

This is something I hadn’t thought about. I’ll have to look into this! We tend to stay in one area for at least 5 days, so it would be nice to be able to leave it as a base camp and still use the truck without packing up everything.

Yeah, I hadn’t thought about a trailer. This seems to be the best option.

I’m not afraid of them per se, that was just a bad night. I’ve had about ten grizzly encounters at this point, just none of them in the middle of the night in my tent! We’re super good about cleaning up, removing/eliminating smells, etc. During that evening, the only thing we had that smelled was us. Ha. If it were just me, I’d keep on tent camping.

Ours has been great. Used trailers can sometimes be found for close to the same cost of a good RTT and rack setup. Prices of new ones can get a little absurd, but they can be found for fair prices. Superior Lite Campers and Hiker Campers are two good ones that start at reasonable prices. I built mine to keep cost down, but we are looking at selling it in the near future and going with a 5x10 Hiker.

I've owned and slept in a 6 ft bed and a 5 ft bed. I don't think the 6 ft was that much more comfortable. Yes it was better for two people but you still had the height of the camper shell. So it was tight climbing in and out. I'd probably buy a RTT over getting another truck if I love the one I have. And I do LOVE the one I have.
