I did my oil change this weekend. prepping for my T-day cross country drive to let my mom belittle me with love, and judgement. :). (therapist said it takes time...)

anyways. the first sign of trouble was the skid plate bolts. they were TIGHT!! I had to stop, get my 6-point sockets and longer wrench to get them to submit. I looked at the oil filter canister with trepidation. the oil plug, was tight..."mmmm..do I really need to change the filter?"

I put the tool on the filter canister and flat out giggled nervously. it was tight!! herculean tight! I put a foot against a tire and pushed while I pulled on the wrench. nothing. zip, nada. zero movement. I went and got my rubber mallet and make-believed I had an impact wrench and tapped tap tap, it loose. it was stupid tight. pretty sure it is a o-ring seal, and not a torqued seal. it came off!

I put it back together and looked lovingly at my stash of filters. I am not going back for my free oil changes. even tho I make a damn mess draining that canister. (I am going to buy the hose kit)

I understand time is money for them, but damn...damn!

    Wrong forum?

The reality is for the most part the the least experienced, lowest paid people are what they use for oil changes and they push them to get as many done in a day as possible so mistakes are often made at the lube rack and the inexperienced guys often don't know the difference between properly tight, not tight enough, and overtight.

It's why quicklubes have such a bad rap becuase it's even worse there.

The first "free" oil change for my 2021 Sport wasn't until 10K miles...I paid to have mine done at 5K.

That was the one and only time I had that dealership perform maintenance on my truck.

Since I've installed Fumoto + Aluminum Housing, I do my own oil changes and have different dealership rotate my tires for CARFAX updates.

That' good you are getting the drain valve for the Housing Unit.

Here's the mess I made before I bought Fumoto:

    You own a 3rd Gen along with a 2006...yes?

So, which year truck did you experience this incident?

You have me nervous to take my new truck in for the dealer oil change! I also have an opposite kind of story from a quick lube on my 3rd gen. I never opened the hood between my oil changes at that place, nobody did, but when they opened it they came and asked me where the oil filler cap was! I could confidently tell them they were the last place to have popped the hood. So I had potentially drove 5000 mile without a cap. At least the owned it and drove out to get a replacement free of charge!

    You reminding me about something...

I would not mind if they did not replace the oil filter at that first oil change...no way they could have over-torqued the housing! lol

With said components added to my truck, I will be the only one performing oil changes.

Fortunately, I'm retired military and have access to the Auto Hobby Shop on Dover AFB...which makes it all convenient. :)

I swear Hercules himself had put the oil filter on a Cummins I own in a piece of equipment the first time I change the oil in it.

thing was stupid tight, I destroyed the filter and turned a 15 minute project into a 2 hour one
