speaking as someone that once spent parts of a family vacation changing 9 flats, and i see no reason to go beyond the oem jack. definitely curious as to the reasoning for that.

 

Ah these comments are funny. Try lifting a 75 lb 3 ton jack into the back of your Tacoma. Let me know how that goes.

A 2 ton aluminum jack is perfect for lifting 1 (ONE) corner of your Tacoma. For instance replacing 1 tire or fixing a cv axle on that corner.

Save the 3 ton+ jacks for the house. Bring 1 jack stand with you. I also recommend a jack stand with a locking pin as someone suggested. I also do recommend bringing a 6 ton jack stand. Daytona or Big Red. The 3 ton are too short.

 

People make combination jack/jackstand. A central cylinder jack that you lock when at height like a jackstand.

I cannot comment on their effectiveness but people mention they exist.

Less weight and size than a floor jack or high lift, and can be used on stuff a high lift would damage (also less chance of loosing teeth)

Op, whatever you get, do not put any of these large heavy objects in the cab with you without securing them very well

 

I do the same, even when working on brakes. Always put a tire under the car.
Oil and coolant changes are done on the ramps rates at 6,500# per pair/3,250# each. And chokes at the rear wheels.

 

Something that I didn't see mentioned;

Pay attention to the maximum lift height, especially the cheaper jacks or low profile ones. A lot of those jacks won't get a Tacoma high enough to get the tires off the ground when lifting from the frame, especially if you are lifted. And when checking those measurements remember it's not just frame to ground, add suspension droop as well.

 

I have an old craftsman that fits in the sunken space behind the drivers seat. It lifts enough to change a tire.

 

Sears used to sell a small floor jack that came in a blow molded plastic case. I bought one years and years ago and I throw it in the bed when I'm taking a road trip, especially if I'm towing a trailer.

Yes. This. I only carry my HF lightweight 2 ton floor jack when I'm going into bad places. Under the rear seat, I always have the OEM jack, plus a HF 3 ton hydraulic jack, just in case.

 

Floor jacks work splendidly on a floor. Anywhere else you want the bottle jack that Toyota gave you.

I’ve used the stock bottle jack to get off a hill of mud I was high centered on and when changing wheels in a rough parking lot where the truck kept slipping off my (cheap) floor jack because it wouldn’t roll properly. The stock bottle jack works, is lightweight, and fits nicely under the back seat.

Floor jacks have be able to roll, because the lifting surface rises in an arc, not straight up like a bottle jack. Depending on the type of wheels and the surface they might not roll well. I’ve been there.

Floor jacks are awesome for the garage.

 

I had a suspension squeek that I wanted to get some fluid film on. I jacked the truck up with my 3 ton Daytona floor jack and discovered that I couldn't use my 3 ton stands to hold the frame up high enough to sag the springs.

I bought a pair of 6 ton stands and had no troubles.

Speaking of which, my suspension squeek is still silent, so I'm happy with that as well.

I carry sometimes an Arcan 3 Ton Aluminum floor jack in the bed when I am on the road or in remote areas. But it is heavy and I don't really like lifting it in and out. I may just try the bottle jack on a sunny Sunday so I am familiar with it should I ever need it. I do have an extra Hercules long anvil impact so maybe this should live back there too.

I saw someone mention a smaller more compact version of the Badlands jack is in the works. This was at SEMA. Perhaps this would be a good one to carry regularly.

 

My truck lifted 1.8" and the low profile is able to lift the front tires off the floor with 1-1.5" available. Make sure to get one that is close to 20" of lift hight

 

Since no one has mentioned it. Look into Safe Jack, compact bottle jack with a bunch of lifting attachments. The duffle will fit in relatively small spots and the attachments can grow with your lift. It's not cheap though.

If you're not lifted and don't plan on it, the factory bottle jack will get the job done. Safe Jack also has a ton of attachments that could possibly work with any bottle jack.
