I don't really hit a lot of rocky trails but I spend a faire amount of time on loose gravel trails and it snows quite a bit where I live and the plows are not always quick getting around. I want a very strong snow and gravel road tire that is also good on road. The durability of an D rated tire isn't really of a huge value to me.

From what I've read the KO3's have a softer ride and better on road economy than the AT4W's but in the size 265/70r16 KO3's don't come in an SL.

So which would be the better on road tire the D rated KO3's or the SL rated AT4W's?
