Working on my neighbours shit box Kia. Winter tires, oil change , valve cover gasket , spark plugs and high pressure power steering line and a cv shaft. I did everything and I saved the cv shaft for last thinking it will take 10 minutes like usual. 2 hours later 20 ton press and half a bottle acetylene and oxygen I finally got it out

 

^10 minutes on a Tacoma because Toyota has all kinds of seals, O-rings, and dust caps preventing the CV joint splines from rusting to the hub. Takes longer on most other vehicles. Need the grandfather of all air hammers (though it's quite expensive):

I think my wife has something like that. Never seen her touch a CV axle though

 

I just watched a video of that air hammer we don’t have a astro dealer and warranty would be a pain in the ass . I have best snap on one and my buddy came over with his matco one and the cv shaft told us to fuck off . Tried everything in book. I couldn’t really get it the press without cutting the wheel bearing out so I don’t fuck up the knuckle. Made 2 relief cuts on the hub/ heated glowing red while rigging it up in the bearing puller to hold it in the press and then finally it broke free. Cleaned up the knuckle and went together no problem. It was a side job - everything goes wrong during a side job!! I always tell myself this is the last side job every time ….

 

Talk about gettin’ Medieval on it.
