While having the tires rotated, I was told the lug nuts were "swollen" because of the the two piece construction. I never noticed but maybe I've just been lucky.

I would like to see these “swollen nuts” of yours.

but in any case. Cheap enough replacement to do yourself.

The Ford dealership I worked at briefly told everybody their nuts were swollen when they came in for tire rotations and needed to be replaced. It was standard protocol to pad the bill. They would also look to see if the customer had stupid tattooed on their forehead so they could gouge them more. I was there 3 months and quit before I got fired because we were being told transmissions had to meet certain parameters before, they could be replaced when Ford had Focus and Fiesta transmission problems a few years back. The customers were bringing in their cars with transmissions slipping and then being told it didn't meet certain parameters. Other words when a car was near the end of its warranty, they wouldn't replace the transmissions. Dicked the customer instead charging them for replacements after the warranty expired. I couldn't do it and kept telling customers to fight it. Fortunately, another job offer got me out of there. Dealerships are there to make money and customer service and loyalty are just another tool they use to take advantage of you. Never go back to a stealership when the car is out of warranty.
Lug nuts (capped) do swell. Mine did on my 13 Sienna after 11 years I had one go bad. Not all of them.

The shop does try to sell you stuff, after all, they're a business. If swollen lug nuts is a thing, I'll buy a set. If one nut is a little tight in the socket, it can wait.

It's a real thing with the cheap factory lug nuts. They only last so long. If you rotate tires regularly, you'll need new lug nuts before you buy the 2nd set of tires for most new vehicles.

Basics. Tires, painted headlighes, UHLM, baby winch in the bed, and heated mirrors :)
Definitely a thing. Been working at a stealership for a while now and come across them often. Really breaks the service rhythm when ya gotta spend an extra 30secs on each of 20/24 lug nuts smacking them outta the socket.

My rule of thumb is: if only a few are swollen I’ll set em aside and recommend the customer replaces just those. If it’s half or more I’ll recommend all of them as the rest are never far behind.

fords lugnuts are truely garbage. They should replace them with solid lug nuts. Its not an upsale item its just they are junk... I replaced them all my self. Some things yes are unecessary and over cost like a cabin air filter.

if you had one lugnut that is jacked up and you have a flat no way you are loosening it..much less changing the tire.

It's enough of a problem tool companies started making half sized sockets just for swollen nutz.

I'd just get some McGard or Gorrilla 1 piece nutz and be done with the swollen nuts.

    Just get new ones.

We used to upsell nuts all the time when they started swelling. Wanna know why?

It’s a safety concern. Once they start they don’t stop. So even if it’s a little snug now, a couple more months you may not be able to change a tire on the side of the road. Maybe you end up stranded with no cell service. It’s a cheap insurance policy, to the customer. Unless you’re just a dirty thieving shop.
