I would also find a cat dealer and purchase an SOS kit and take an oil sample. My cat dealer has them done within 24 hours of receipt, for $15 dollars that’ll give you some good insite

also run by an auto parts store or harbor freight and buy/rent a head gasket test kit

My sister was getting really stressed and was preparing to spend $$$ with a “likely head gasket” condensation on her oil cap diagnosis. The “wipe and wait” method along with some slightly deferred maintenance had her 4-Runner running perfectly again. Fluids… filters… plugs.

It’s at least worth a shot.

Pull the plugs and using a scope, look at the piston crown/head, if it's missing when it starts from antifreeze intrusion, one crown should be noticeably cleaner then all the rest. If they all look the same, get a second opinion. You may be able to rent/buy a scope from autozone then return it when done. Good time to replace the plugs to make sure the misfire isn't from worn out ones.

Your mechanic offered $5000, but I am seeing trucks like yours sell for almost double in my area. I would get another estimate, do it at home, or pay him for the work. I would not sell it. The truck you would buy for $8600 (his offer + cost to fix) is probably going to be older/more miles. Also, you would not know its history and it may come with its own problems.

I have a 2012 4 cylinder, and if you happen to live in Maine I would be happy to help you with the head gasket job.

    Just saying
"According to Toyota, there is no set mileage interval for replacing the timing chain in a Tacoma as it is typically considered a "maintenance-free" component that should last the life of the engine if properly maintained, meaning regular oil changes are key; however, if you notice any signs of wear or unusual noises, consult your local Toyota dealership for inspection."

He probably considers its the timing chain causing of the rattle, it's not recommended at 100K, it's an "as needed" change interval and is considered to last the life of the motor. As soon as it's apart and they can look at the timing chain, tensioner and guides he'll know if that's the culprit. I kind of doubt it but who knows. He's incorrect telling you to say it's recommended by toyota at this mileage. That's the reason auto manufacturers mostly went away from timing belts, they need replaced around every 100K mi, timing chains typically last the life of the motor in modern vehicles.

Be wary of any mechanic that gives you a large estimate for repair.. and then offers to buy the vehicle from you

Moisture under the oil cap doesn't necessarily mean you have a bad HG

Nowhere does toyota say the chain needs to be done at 100k

BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
I can almost guarantee you that all you need is a valve cover and spark plug tube gaskets. Please get the truck out of there before they really f you over.
