    Hello all.
Helping my buddy do a big maint. on his 2008 Taco Overlander.
Has 120 k miles and want to change the coolant out (at least 5 years old).

Is Toyota coolant best or is there another compatible brand?
If I need to change coolant hoses is OEM best for longevity?
Should the radiator also be changed out due to age?

    Thank you in advance.

Gates and Dayco both make quality hoses. I would stick with OEM coolant. The original radiators have been known to leak coolant into the transmission causing the dreaded 'pink milkshake"

Are there any online Toyota part suppliers that are less than going to the local dealer?

These guys are pretty good for OEM parts:

OEM or HPS coolant hoses are what I’d use.

For coolant I’ve used O’Reillys “Asian vehicle” pink stuff and it’s been good.
For OEM performance, OEM will always be best.

I've used Lowe Toyota in Georgia multiple times with good results. Try and find someone close to you that sells online. IIRC, the standard discount was at least 20% at Lowe.

Do not use Toyota parts deal or any of their other online stores; there are multiple threads about them here. They're great until there's an issue with your order; then you're screwed.

I've used green Prestone coolant in my Tacoma for at least 150K miles and no issues.

The OEM hoses and radiator are high quality pieces. At 120k I wouldn't change either as preventive maintenance, unless they are showing signs of leakage. (pink or orange deposits) Definitely change the coolant with the Toyota OEM coolant as specified: It is overdue. There are different colors according to the application. If you do change or disturb the hoses/clamps, re-use the OEM clamps if they are in good shape. Mark the hoses and put the clamps back in the exact same place and orientation.

    minor tweaks
Wait till it needs a waterpump in another 30K or so to do the hoses. My OEM hoses were fine at 150K when I did the WP but I replaced them anyway w/ Gates hoses from Rock Auto. Not too worried about not going w/ OEM. Coolant hose failures are much rarer these days and age is usually the compelling reason to swap them out, the tacoma and most modern vehicles have fairly stable temps and aren't hard on hoses unlike the old days when blowing a hose was more common.

When I was in quality at a Cummins plant it was either Gates and Dayco. Same with belts. Before I retired purchasing was starting to source some of this stuff from places like India and as long as the material cert matched the numbers on the hoses and belts it was good to go.
I just purchased a serpentine belt for my 2010 and the Gates made in Mexico was more expensive than the Bando one made in the U.S.

    Hmm . . . none as yet, that's why i'm here . . .
I'm running a 2008 still on original hoses and at 180K.
