I just completed my first oil change of my 2018 Tacoma TRD offroad. I filled the first 5L of the 6.1L oil required with the correct 0W-20 oil (Mobil 1 fuel economy), but just discovered that the remaining 1.1L I had accidently grabbed my 2nd gen's oil 5W-30 (Mobil 1 high milage).

Do i need to take the hit, drain the oil and replace with all 0W-20 or is this okay? I am in Montana and going into the winter months might be bad to have that 16% of higher weight oil for cold startups? If i do change the oil out do i need to change the filter and drain that oil as well? I'm currently thinking i should, but would like to not if not a big deal.

Welcome to the forum. Bear in mind that that it’s highly diluted so it should be okay. There’s some Toyota mechanics around here so perhaps they can provide a better answer.

I'd have zero fear running that.

Lots of folks have some really weird superstitions about oil. As long as it has enough, and is more or less the right thickness you are fine.

I've used a quart of 10w-40 motorcycle oil in my car before. Normally takes 0w-20. That was 100k miles ago.

    It’s fine
I’d drain it anyways when I had the time

Run it. No problem. It's heavily diluted. Would be a waste of good oil to drain it.

Many of us run 5w30 full time.

    Welcome to the forum :hattip:

You have nothing to be concerned about.
The viscosity change is very minor, even better both products are the same brand.

Run it to your full service interval, 5K usually, use the proper 0W-20 next time.

Wasn't all that long ago that vehicles used 10W-30. The only reason we're using 0W-20 is for the .1 MPG gain. Even with the advances in manufacturing, I can't believe that oil that thin isn't causing premature wear.

Long story short: go with it.

Thanks all for the quick responses! Glad to hear I don't have to dump the good oil.

I’ve been running 5w-30 for the last 10000+ miles.

I ran 5w-30 synthetic in my cars in Alaska. At 30 below, without block heaters. You will be OK in winter.

Speaking of oil viscosity; I bought a used Rav4 and it was due for the first OC since owning it. I went to a Jiffy lube place that serviced my fleet vehicle for 120K mi and were generally pretty good. I since retired so it's been a couple years since I was in there. The quoted oil change was $190 inc air and cabin filters. WTF, I know I'm old and prices can be shocking but that's crazy, 2 bills to drop the oil. I was told; It's because the Toyota recommended viscosity of 0W16 and they had to use the "special oil" which is Valvoline Syn 0W-16 @ $20 a qt. After I finished laughing because that would be the most expensive oil I've ever used in a motor and also knowing Valvoline is nothing special. I asked what's so special about this oil that it's 2x what your other oil runs and was told it's different then most other vehicles use so "it's special" There was no way I'm paying 20 bucks a qt for Valvoline, 100% ripoff from based on Toyota's special viscosity but the oil was already out so I told them to use 0W20 syn, which dropped the price of the OC by $50. The service guy looked at me like I'm an idiot for using an oil with a 3pt increase in viscosity. F'em. but yes I was an idiot, but it was for using Jiffy Lube. When I got home I checked, 5 qts of the exact same oil is $27 on Amzn. Did some research and discovered it's a mileage based viscosity change that's also used to benefit the newer belt driven starter systems. Compared MPG: 0W16 (31mpg), 0W20 (31mpg). I'll change it back to 0W16 next change but I wonder how many customers JL rips off with toyota's special viscosities.
