    hey

noticed my 4.0, 89k miles kind of boggs or shudders - any advice, mine script from another thread below
    5 speed auto

HEY - i am having same issues on my 89k miles 2015 trd offroad. backcountry slight inclines in 5th gear, 38-45mpg it bogs. are we sure there isnt a torque converter issue going on here? im getting a triple drain and fill free of charge from where i got it, and if it isnt fixed theyre going to toyota with it, torque converter? is this actually normal or fine, slap it into 4G to avoid? my 2004 4.0 4speed didnt do it...ugh. or am i chasing this for nothing?? also, this happens for just a few seconds before she smooths out. i am def light on the throttle type of person. and i can get the same shudder if in 5th, low rpm, and accelerate, no downshift, it kind of boggs her a bit

    thanks

It should downshift when you apply throttle to maintain speed.

yeah - i meant when i am light on throttle low rpm 5ith, maybe slight incline in road, not necessarily something it should downshift for, but
not bogg either. its wierd. there are a lot of torque converter threads out there. i have 90 days (30 in) full warranty, so i did schedule with them
and they said triple drain and fill and exam of transmission (i did a drain and fill at toyota with my old 4runner, couple hundred bucks) but
by scheduling appointment in my 90 day window i do get the better drain and fill and if it persists they will send it to toyota. i am think it is worth the hr ride monday after work
and they have a laoner ready for me. and i said when i rome, 60 + mph turn to the right and maybe the very slightest front wheel bearing noise.
kind of my first time exercising a warranty, but also wondering if im wasting my time lol
a cool thing is now that i scheduled the service, they extend fixing it to 12,000 miles since i brought it up. so it pushes out my 90 day window a lot

Is this happening all the time or only when the truck is cold for the first few minutes? I get the most notable lagging shift type issues, usually in the AM first startup especially on a cold day. For me it happens the most notable on the way to work getting onto a local highway like 1/2 mile away from the house, where transmission is cold it's slow to down shift or upshift. Once the transmission gets up to temp it shifts normally.

Also I would say my experience is these are not the smoothest/most refined transmissions for driving experience, I have always felt like my transmission is a little clunky in the 160k miles I've owned, especially when driven with light gas pedal inputs. Though pretty dang reliable only ever changed fluids in mine....

    thanks

maybe it is when cold, and i live where mornings have been 29* already. but i need to confirm, and am still leaning towards getting free covered drain and fills (3 of them basically replaces fluid) and documented in case it persists. i am playing around with my 90 days coming up, but the serv manager said since you scheduled this within the time we will take care of it fully up to an additional 12,000 miles

just a couple of things tbh
cant say its exactly the same but i had a 2015 sr5 5 speed auto with 105k miles on it. when i got the truck it felt fine and had no issues after a year of driving i noticed it started just loosing power and as you stated bogg down in a way. the truck wouldnt shift down if you gave it throttle it would just sit there and try to speed up... i made a thread and everyone screamed its low on fluid.... so i did a drain and fill and when i drained it i found metal chunks and a leak around the front of the transmission. ive had two friends that had a failure like this which is normally the trans is on the way out the door.. i cant remember what it fully was that the shop found and what my buddy talked about but it was something to do with the fluid pump welding onto something in the transmission and sending it out the window kinda thing?

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/2015-sr5-transmission-issues.840974/
here is my thread for my truck that i use to have. idk if its the same or not hopefully not!

thank you, my appointment is in writing :)

and whats awesome is if i get it back after the triple drain and fill and inspection (by a master tech)
then she does go to toyota. so i need to see this through

i could always do drain and fill alone and deal with tranny $, but why i figured when i know these places
have awesome warrantys and service. i didnt buy the extended carmax plan (theyre good) i knew the 90 day default one is competitive, and id pick up on stuff within that window. so thats what i did

just tough call because in every other way she is lovely, just quick bog in 5gear low rpm, can actually feel and hear it

hopefully its something simple and not something like my old truck... i looked into getting my trans rebuilt but the shops out here wanted 4k and it would be gone for months and with it being my only vehicle thats not something i can have happen plus we were already looking into full size trucks so parted ways with it and went full size.

thanks and yeah, i read your post and you had worse symptoms, but i do feel better from you and others with my decision to schedule this and essentially extend them fixing it all the way

Manually downshift out of OD and into 4th gear before you start up inclines. Just because it's an automatic there is no law that says you can't manually use the best gear. If you have oversize tires, even just a little bigger, that robs power too.

I know that and could do that, but does that mean my transmission is normal and healthy? I have 1 size up tires...my 2004 4runner w skinny didn't do that, had it for 8 years up until a month ago

Thanks too I am tempted to jist run it and play w 4th hear but it's a lot of hard work and cash i paid and family new truck

Seems normal enough if you have larger tires. I spent most of my time on 33s (before regear) in 4. Could be that I'm misunderstanding the issue, though.

Sounds like to me its the normal bogging. You will know when your trans shutters. I promise you. Mine shuttered awhile back and i fixed it. It no joke feels like a sledge hammer is beating the truck. Here lately ive been behind slow people and got to feel it once again. Toyota was so stupid to want to have these trucks in overdrive as little as 35. and you will feel it vibrate. if its a regular slight vibration your feeling, its the norm for these trucks

Wow maybe it's just thos 5speed I'm not used to and my 1 size up wildpeaks

No shit I might have wasted a good amount of time for nothing

I'll play with 4th gear and do a local drain and fill at toyota on my own accord

Logistics brutal and busy right now. F it

    Thanks ppl

as long as nobody beat the hell out of that truck, with 89k miles, the fluid should be realatively clean still. However, at that mileage, i would still advise you to at least do a drain and fill. But i wouldnt worry about it, your describing to me what mine does. plus, a lot of 2nd trucks were underfilled from the factory

It isn't beat its mad clean the engine itself even is super clean haha

Thank you very much. I went down a rabbit hole I think. It does feel like 5th gear 38 mph it's jist kind of chugging my + size tires a couple secs. And I am light footed

def will make it worse running oversize tires. I dont know if you seen me edit my comment or not, i forgot to add that lots of 2nd gen trucks were underfilled from the factory. So, def not a bad idea to do it not only since its a hair past due, but to ensure its filled to spec
