So been working on my old off road truck. Just didn't the lower A arm, shocks, sway bar link, outer tie rod and lower ball joint. Took it down this morning and got it aligned. Tonight was driving down the road and the tire fell off doing about 45 mph. There are no studs left in the holes at all. Does anyone have any similar situation and identified the cause. Side note lugs are torqued to 83 ft lbs every time.

Someone didn't tighten the lug nuts or just put one on and forgot the other ones.

No studs? They cant just pull out through the hub. They could break off I suppose. But youd have to drive it off a cliff.

I kept breaking studs on my 72' FJ40's driver side front after a pretty wild trip to Silver Lake and a bit of jumping. Couldn't really see anything amiss just looking at it but after I replaced 5 or 6 of them, I decided to tear everything down, the axle spindle the bearings rode on was broken and what was really the only thing holding the rim and tire to the vehicle was the warn locking hub components which transmitted tons of force to the studs somehow. Once I figured it out, it was an easy fix but you had to take it apart to see what was going on.

No studs left in it at all I have begun to wonder if the back part wore off over time as it has original studs with 206,000 off road miles

What wheels are you running? Lug centric or hub centric?
    What type lug nuts?

With how oblong those holes are it looks like the studs were loose and wobbling for quite some time.

Thats wild. It doesnt take too long with a loose wheel I suppose but I'd imagine the terrain must've been ruff not to notice.
Ive had a trailer lug nuts rip thru a steel rim from loose lugs

I was looking at that and trying to decide whether or not it was an optical illusion or oval in shape.

Did you get new wheels? Are the lug nuts compatible with the wheels? The only reason ive ever seen that happen is because the lug nuts were not torqued properly. Maybe your torque wrench isnt quite right.

Yeah, I would think that driving around with loose lug nuts could cause this.

Or, they were the incorrect lug nuts for the rim. I can absolutely see that happening. Even a very slight movement, and even if torqued properly but the nut seated at the hub and not the wheel holes could absolutely do what is shown.

Sorry been busy and just got around to working on this again. After looking at things I think i may have found the reasoning. The hub was replaced before I bought it and the studs were never seated properly. Looked like the splines only made it about half-way through then they didn't even try to seat them.
