Hello, I am looking for a 2nd generation Tacoma with off road package, I have done a lot of research and decided this is what I want, I am currently driving a 98 f150 ( I don’t swap trucks often) but I need a dependable truck to last a few years, my questions and concerns are, I like the fuel mileage of a 4cld but I’ve heard I wouldn’t actually save a ton because of my terrain ( I live in the mountains of East Tennessee) and I do cut a lot of firewood but would also like to take road trips and truck camp ( somewhat concerned about fuel mileage) Would you recommend a V6 or 4cld and any other watch outs for a 2nd generation? Thanks

Welcome to TW! Good luck with your search. Make sure you check the frame for rust. Gas mileage will depend on many variables, if you live in hilly terrain and you’re going to haul firewood and camping gear then don’t expect great mpg’s with either a 4 or 6 cylinder.

Thanks for the reply, let me rephrase my question, Just for highway use not with a load would you see a big difference in MPG in mountains between the 4 and 6 cylinder ? And would the 4 cylinder be stout enough to haul short distances with firewood without overloading the motor? As far as camping I will not be pulling a camper just a camper top and lightweight gear.
