I said the same thing, my wife had two requests, Maytag and large capacity and that's the biggest one I think they make. I said to the bearded burly tatted salesman, I ain't trying to fly a spaceship here brother. I said* I do very important things like that all day long. I need simple that my wife can't possibly break.

*I did not say that

it's got more buttons than my radio!

these machines are far too dainty for me. when will someone come out with a manly clothes washer? it just needs 4 wash settings:
    good day clothes
    bad day clothes
    really bad day clothes
    better off incinerated

    and 3 size settings:
    oops, date night
    weekend
    week

dual feature. for only a few items of clothes. all wash cycles, including 'better off incinerated' are still selectable.

so different question to the shop.

saturday, i went out with a few friends for breakfast at a different place. i don't get out to sit-down restaurants much since before covid(almost all to-go to eat at home, or drive-thru[through?]), but it was a nice change, and they wanted to try some place different.

food and conversation was good, the waitress was good and attentive. we all got our own checks.

the part that threw me was when we all went to pay. first, the waitress just handed out the bills, and instructed us to go up to the front counter to make the payment before leaving. which was a little weird for me. previously, most places had the waitress take the check up to the front, and that's also how she gets her tip. so now the check was hands-off. the next part was that gratuity was 4% and included at the bottom of the check.

pre-covid, which was really the last time i went to any sit-down restaurant outside of steak-n-shake, (which stopped waiters during and after covid, adopting a more mcdonalds staffing method) i'd tip $20 to any waiter/waitress that does decent, and this was no different--i was prepared to give this waitress a $20 tip on a $26 order. but i hesitated and didn't this time because of the added gratuity 'demand' on the bill. i felt it was entirely unnecessary, and overstepping on the restaurants part to be requiring any level of tip. so i left the bill as it was, and didn't add anything on top of it for the waitresses good service.

the question is was i wrong? is this just the new post-covid restaurant thing, to add gratuity to the check? should i have added extra tip to the bill anyways? should i have stopped the waitress and given it to her directly? it's all left me wondering if i just don't know how restaurants work anymore.

To me, a tip is earned.. not demanded. You could always give it to the actual person if they earned it.

I'd be curious if that 4% actually goes to the waitress, or if the restaurant is taking some or all of it. If antiperspirant is earned I give it. But rarely go out

in most places dine-in restaurants' waitstaff get sub-minimum wage ($2.50-$5.00/hr) + tips
some places will make put a minimum tip on the bill for large groups
