To be fair, it wouldn't be the first time a dealership didn't do what they said they were gonna do, and pass it as done. Whether people read all 30 pages or not, its still fair to be skeptical of what "repairs" actually took place.

It wouldn't surprise me to see a dealer (who made it seem like parts were unobtainable) just throw it back together, after learning its been lemon'd. They're now not under any pressure to fix it, and could very likely just plan on sending it to auction and cutting their losses. Considering they haven't made any attempts to make the whole process easier for OP with a rental, it wouldn't surprise me one bit for them to have the attitude of "just give the truck back to him, its already lemon'd, whats he gonna do about it?"

Not saying they didn't do all the work they said they did, just saying its okay to be skeptical. It doesn't take a genius to realize that the dealership has lost no money on this, only made lots of money.

Side note, your cell #/email is visible on that invoice.

Out of curiosity can you pop the hood and look at the work they did? I’d be curious to know how much shit was not put back together correctly

The motor locked up from lack of oil due to a gross engine oil pressure leak…
The crank pretty much welded itself to the connecting rods, has the OP drove it till it was done…
there is no putting it back together because it was lemon law’d….
Toyota owns the truck and they are re-sold…
It’s just an engine swap, they’re not gonna cut their losses…
    In all fairness…:frusty:

I wouldn’t sweat it, 2 weeks ago you had a brand new engine and now you’ll have another brand new engine.
Same thing if they replace the entire truck, just another brand new engine.

I never said they just put it back together using old broken parts. I said its reasonable to be skeptical of the "repairs" they made, given their lack of empathy towards OP and helping with a loaner/rental. Its not unreasonable to think that the dealer, knowing its been lemon law'd, put it back together (with or without all new parts) half-assedly, knowing that their hands are washed clean of it at the end of the day. Whether they want to resell it, auction it, or trade it to another dealer, they get to make money on it. They get paid to fix it, they get paid to sell it, and they get paid to convince OP he's getting some killer deal on a brand new truck at invoice.

I don't think anyone is arguing the technicality of what it takes to do auto repairs; people are questioning the integrity of the dealer OP is dealing with.

Well, this is disappointing as Hell for the OP AND ME.

like a damn idiot I traded my 22 Tacoma in on a small Honda CRV and I Hate the car, as I miss my Tacoma that much!

Was considering a 2025 Tacoma, but now I’m skeptical

I didn’t mention, that at 77yo, if I get a 2025 Tacoma, it’ll be my 4th over these many years

That truck is too dangerous to drive ! Isn't the dealership liable for giving the vehicle back that obviously is broke beyond their aptitude to repair . A consumer affairs lawyer would have a field day with this case if anybody gets hurt .

What makes it too dangerous to drive? Purportedly, they fixed it by putting a new engine in it. That's a process that happens with other cars all the time and nobody bats an eye. The engine blew up, so they replaced it. What gives you the idea that they lack the aptitude to replace it?

I really don't get the pearl clutching and hand wringing in this thread. It's true that OP had an odd and unfortunate failure and that the dealer didn't handle the situation in a way most people would find acceptable, but it's a one-off situation. If I've learned anything here, it's that I probably wouldn't want to buy a car from that dealer.

If this was me, I would be fucking pissed and write-off Toyota for good. This issue started in Aug, its now December, four months. A 50k plus truck, drive it two weeks, it dies and now you wait ~ 4 months making payments on a dead POS hunk-O-metal. Now, ~4 months later, its fixed and still not correct? Yeah, I would be through the roof.

More common than you think, finding confident technicians has been very challenging in all brands…
These young kids getting into the industry, don’t want to be an apprentice for more than two months, and then they think they’re full-blown techs….
They take a bunch of online tests & they think they desreve their shot to be a full blown on your own tech...
It never works, the flop & fail....
I was a helper well over 5 years & not cuz I wasnt ready, they groomed me to be great.....
I retired early 2022, that dealership has gone through over six technicians since I have left, needless to say they still haven’t replaced me…
Everyone of them has been a hack and incompetent, but they need individuals to fill stalls…
No matter how good or bad they are...

This has happened to my brother in law quite a few times over his 40 yrs as a body tech. He'll leave and within a year get a call asking what it would take to get him to come back. Good problem to have for sure..in his position at least.

I missed the part about the transmission or whatever. It got lost in all the rest of the whinging.

I don't deny that I'd be pissed, but being on the outside, I can see things a bit more objectively and dispassionately than if I weren't. I'm still seeing this as a great advertisement for patronizing Steven Wade Toyota's competitors.

The commentary committee is purely speculating, check engine light came-on after picking up the truck & went into failsafe...
Could be simple as tech forgot to perform a misfire profile relearn.....
