I thought the spare didn't have one and only 4 could be programmed at a time? This could have been for the 2nd gen

you can get OE Denso sensors off of rock auto for pretty cheap, then just have the shop install them. No programming needed. Denso supplies Toyota with the sensors and the dealer marks them up. I just did this after needing a new 'tire shop special' sensor once a year for 3 years since i got them and i was tired of going back.

I know my spare going low kicks the light, so you made me wonder.....

According to available information, most Toyota Tacoma trucks from the 2006 model year and onwards typically have TPMS sensors in their spare tires, meaning that most Tacoma spare tires will have a TPMS sensor installed.

    Key points to remember:
    • Federal mandate:
Since the TREAD Act mandated TPMS systems in 2007, all new vehicles manufactured in the US, including the Tacoma, are required to have TPMS sensors on all tires, including the spare.

    • Direct TPMS system:
Toyota Tacoma utilizes a direct TPMS system, where the sensors are directly integrated into the valve stem of each tire.

    • Check your specific model:
While most newer Tacomas have TPMS sensors in their spares, it's always best to consult your vehicle's owner's manual to confirm for your specific model year.

Very interesting. Back when I had my '13 taco I was looking to get a set of winter tires but I didn't because I read on here that you could only do 4 at a time. What is the source of your info? I also wonder how does the truck know which 4 tires it's reading?

I saw it in multiple areas after you got me wondering, though on mine, I was all but sure as in the past, a few times mu light came on, I checked the 3 corners, and all were atr, ort near where they should be, and checked the spare, found it low, topped it off, and light would go off a short way down the road. ....as far as where I found the above, I just googled 'what Tacoma truck spares have tps sensors;'....

...follow up, despite what I found on line about the spare needing a sensor, when I just had my new tires installed, it does not, so please disregard my inaccurate posts above,

....admittedly, i'm a bit confused, as, more than once, after adding air to a low spare, my light went off. .... repeat coincidence?

$60 per sensor parts and labor at Discount Tire.

    Costco does it, too.

Can you turn off the TPMS warning light system with a scanner and just run non-TPMS valve stems? Or would that violate federal law?

Winter tires on now strangely the sensors that are not there wait for me to drive about 20 miles to tell me I have 4 flat tires. Nice hand held tire pressure gauge in the glove box in case I really want to know what if any tire is low.

....with my new tire purchase, and having bought 5 OEM sensors on line first, I was changed 11.84 total cost, for the programming of the 4 sensors, as I thought I did, but didn't need, one for the spare. ...'no charge' for tpms 'reset procedure', and 2.96 per for 'tpms valve service kit labor'....

My biggest argument against tpms is the response time. By the time it tells you that you are running low on air, the tire is already flat. If you need the vehicle to tell you that your tire is flat or you'll just keep on driving, well.... something else is wrong. This is why I am sooooooo happy that Canadian law doesn't make these a required accessory. My '23 Offroad doesn't have TPMS, I have the ability to check the tire pressure myself too. A better law for vehicle safety than tpms would require you (not the vehicles sensors) to do a circle check.

....saved my ass this summer, as on my way in to the city and before I got on the expressway, I say the light come on at about the same time as I started to notice it was pulling, pulled over, got out, and heard the hissing, then saw a screw head, and raced back home to my compressor, and then don the street to the shop to get it fixed. ....would have sucked to deal with that on teh expressway....

    Check build thread!
Tacoma spares do not have tpms sensors. I'm a tire tech lol- pulled mine and many friends spare tires off the rim to replace with a appropriate sized one. Not a single 3rd gen has had a sensor in there.
