What dealership did you work at that they let the techs get paid before the work was completed? I’ve never seen or heard of that. Time for us was always flagged once the work order was closed. If you’re waiting for a part, or work was not completed the repair order had to stay open.

    right!!!!
    unless they were just hourly...
Ide get many jobs done even though im still technically waiting on parts...
Sometimes I had "extra" from other jobs, improvised, etc....
Get the car done & get it back to the customer....
Flag the job few months later after the parts come in.
Some techs would freak-out as they feel job is done & they want their money, I look at it as money in the bank...

I was there from 2001-2006. Maybe the industry has changed since then, maybe each dealership makes it's own rules or maybe it's regional thing. When I started they got flagged all hours after teardown which I thought was nuts. As I said I finally convinced management to change that to half after teardown and half at completion. These were body and paint techs. I don't know if mechanics were different although we had one mechanic assigned to the body shop but I don't recall for certain how he was flagged.

I would eat an entire can of beans, a tub of kimchi, wash it down with two beers and then just let one rip right before you hand it in.

This is a very interesting question about the sales tax (the underlined portion above). I'm not sure if you ever got a response since this thread is too long to read the whole thing. It might be worth starting a thread just about this issue and maybe you'll get someone who knows how this aspect of dealership sales tax laws work in your state.

So in other words, I am not that expert, but it seems to me that you are owed the money for the sales tax benefit you received on the original purchase transaction since you can no longer recover that. But it was effectively your "asset" and it was taken from you and, in the end of your sad ordeal, not compensated for (or at least, it doesn't appear it was).

Now the question is, does Toyota owe you that money, does the dealer (separate from Toyota) owe you, or does your state owe you that money?
It's quite possible it's the latter, since the sales tax benefit is probably not something that Toyota pocketed; they paid it to the state per the law that allows the sales tax subtraction on a new vehicle with a trade-in. I say "probably" because I don't know the logistics of this process and it's possible the DEALERSHIP--when it files its 2024 taxes--writes the sales tax on this one transaction off and either gets a refund or doesn't pay the differential. In that case, the dealer, not Toyota, would owe you the money (but you might have to wait until the dealership files its taxes). In any event, you cannot recover that amount yourself since you no longer have the vehicle you traded, but it seems to me that you are owed this amount (you mentioned ~$2500) from either the dealer or the state, or (less likely) Toyota.

I have been researching this topic and have found nothing in my favor. For what its worth Toyota was not required to return that amount ... only the taxes I did pay and that is in the settlement. I know I have to dig deeper and if I went for punitive damages it might have been covered but that meant getting a lawyer and dragging this thing out further.

In my state, TTL is paid back to you by Toyota, minus a use calculation.

That's not the issue though. The issue is that had he kept and traded in the Tacoma, in his state and mine the value of that vehicle is deducted from the cost of the new vehicle he is buying and he only pays taxes on the difference not on the full price of the vehicle. So if you're buying a $50 k truck and your trade is worth $30k, you only pay sales tax on $20k not $50k. So his problem is that now he has no trade in so when he buys another truck he will end up paying a couple thousand more in sales taxes. To make him whole, Toyota should pay the additional tax because his asset is now bought back by them.

I’m not sure on that. That probably depends if his state even has trade-in tax credit. Many of the states don’t.

I’m just waiting to see if the deal even happens…

His state does. That was one of his concerns way back in this thread. And I mentioned that his state does in the post you just replied to.
