hey, considering i do wheel my truck modestly, i was considering carrying a spare CV
my old 4th gen 4runner i had a torn boot once and i had NAPA lifetime put in by mechanic and they actually worked well until i sold it

but i see this used OEM on ebay for $75:
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/196861330516?_skw=tacoma+cv+axle+oem&itmmeta=01JEHSMSGVRVGDKS637DPNQPA5&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA8HoV3kP08IDx+KZ9MfhVJKloaobdNjNTSosdhr7HVMmnUvTYIbgOGdmNtxVxaneX0Z9wlqeQ%2FmJv0WjjIUO+9SDVY5wMUAJJN7LEHTJLk9iI2aWdu7eUsZHzV7IRCvnP7HIvqwBWSD1jHVUlN7Nkk9rhVg8r4NtMAax78oW2q2N75qrusB4hY2qkI8+TdxjEkvpm3YVUUnpU4SEQD07BrHhTIlq5hZzRYKT848P89mLvZAohs6ziuFsozK%2F1kor2WDR4tlec6AL2iipWNyDDMmtfKdHJZ2FY2V2Q8fnFhqHfUDoGJFnog8cMFMA7y6PojQ%3D%3D%7Ctkp%3ABFBMwpjTufRk

and im wondering if i can carry this as a spare or and itd work for either side? saw in some research people mention different brake parts on side specific cv??

i could also go buy a couple napa lifetimes as backups too as an option but id rather grab used oem that i know will work on either side

so are the ones on ebay interchangeable? i want to get axle seals too because i see they often get messed up when changing the shaft out

    thank you

Sounds like a good plan, I just purchased a front axle for my 3rd gen. All for the same reason. Can't answer your specific year questions. In the 3rd gen, side to side they are the same. I would expect the same of prior years, but it is better to be sure. If you do not get any worthy replies here, check the online Toyota parts sites for your year and compare right and left.

I've found buying parts from LKQ can be a bit of a gamble. I still use them a lot but I don't have anything shipped from them. I'm close enough to a warehouse that when I buy a part from them online, I'll take delivery at the warehouse so I can accept or decline the part and get a refund then and there if the part isn't to my liking. It's because in cases like the CV posted in your link, you're not actually getting the CV that's pictured in the eBay ad but something from their national stock. As a result, you could be getting a nearly new CV off of a 2023 Tacoma/4Runner with low miles or one off of a 2005 that's absolutely hammered (they're all the same).

All that said, I feel even an older OEM Toyota CV is better than parts store Chineesium. Unfortunately, I've had lots of bad experiences with part store CV's.

thank you. so a gamble worth taking. like Amazon, i found that ebay returns can be fairly seemless, and it appears that seller has the 30 day return window if what shows up looks too rough
you get like an instant credit, shipping label, and the 30 day window to return

i had bought a bunch of carb rebuild parts for a sportster 1200 i had, then i sold the bike very soon after and returned like 10 parts for it from ebay without much difficulty haha

maybe ill buy one of those from the ebay guy. weird how they list the mileage on some of the cv listings, but your descript made it sound like they are binned up unlabeled. maybe they tag them though when they tear down trucks or however they obtain. smart business idea by some of these people

like my lexus front drain bolt on its way, some guy has the market on lock on ebay!! but that thing hasnt arrived yet and i think it comes from japan, been like 2 weeks. in 2 days i have to report it undelivered...
