You're hunting for a first gen, either auto or manual.

    That's what I read.

Thank guys, looking at gen 1 trucks, I live in flagstaff Az. Sometimes hunt out of state, Truck would be on trailer. Truck would not be hauling gear. Tired of hunting out of a 1 ton. Usually lots of mud chains on all 4, what do you all recommend, manual or auto? For a extra cab?

If you are trailering it somewhere, I’d recommend a side by side

If you like the 2nd gen I would say stay with that gen - they're 7 inches wider than the 1st gens.

Thanks Downey, do the gen 1 ride as nice as the gen 2 ? I know the gen 1 is smaller & lighter, that’s what got my interest, I would load the taco on the back of a goose neck with a truck camper on the front, sounds redneck, but it works.

Not at all. That's the setup quite a few guys use when they go out to the desert with their prerunner / race trucks because it works and is way cheaper than an enclosed trailer / camper.

Either will be good with freshened up suspension componenents like shocks, ball joints and bushings. Stock Toyota leaf springs of all generations like to sag with anything near 150 lbs of gear / tools / etc in the bed. Lots of different options in various price ranges for addressing that too.

To me the biggest difference is the amount of interior room you get based on the extra width of the 2nd gen vs 1st gen. Both come with 6 foot beds or 5 foot beds (1st gen double cabs only come with 5 foot beds and 2nd gen a 5 foot bed is only as an option over the 6 foot bed on double cabs).

1st gen had an ok 4 cyl and a low powered V6. 2nd gen has a slightly more powerful 4 cyl that works ok (in my 2nd gen) and a moderately powerful (for the time) V6. Manual 1st gens are regular and extended cab (2 doors w/ tiny rear seats) 4x4 96-04 and 4 door cabs only auto. Manual 2nd gens are available on regular cab (one row of seats) access cab (mini seats in back) and double cab short bed.

    There you go, haha

Thanks Downey, lots of info there, I have a 96 tracker, was planning on using toyota
Solid axles with coils, lot of work, then started thinking of the taco, mostly running around in the rocks, no shortage in northern Az.

The auto is easy to find, adequately strong, and usually more convenient when hunting. Either works though, is there a reason you were considering looking for a manual?
