    All,
Put on your "tin foil" hats.
Does anyone have thoughts about protecting a 1st Gen Tacoma against an EMP. I have a 2001 3.4L 4WD.
Seems obvious to obtain and protect a spare ECM. Any other thoughts?
    - spare relays/fuses?
    - any other critical solid state components?
    Thanks!

It's less Tacoma and more mod
It might just be full of lies. If your biggest concern under threat of EMP is maintaining some form of reliable transportation you're probably going to want something that doesn't need electricity or gasoline. Cuz I don't know where you guys think gasoline comes from but for most people it comes out of pumps with electronic control systems.

I'm betting on more lies than potting
Look at their installation drawings, it's connected in parallel with your battery. No circuit protection of any kind in the world is in parallel, it has to be in series.

Their sales terminology is also conflating lightning with EMP

EMPs are radiated energy. The only protection from them is to shield whatever you're protecting with a Faraday cage.
Lightning surge protection is installed in series with whatever you're protecting, and it will still fail if the lightning comes from the device side instead of the supply side.

the potting is there to hide the lies :D

    Possible options -

    1. Toyota 4×4 Trucks 1985-and earlier – The key factors that make these types of trucks EMP-ready are a solid front axle and a carbureted 22R motor. It’s a simple setup, but when it comes to withstanding a pulse, these will do it.

    2. American-made pre-1980 trucks, SUVs, and commercial vehicles – American truck motors were built very simple pre-1980. When it comes to choosing the right type of truck to use after an EMP, follow this rule of thumb: The simpler the motor, the better. American trucks can withstand and handle the duty of a bug-out vehicle.

    3. Dune Buggy – These are not fun, but they are awesome bug-out vehicles that will withstand an EMP.

    4. Pre-1980 Jeep – Jeeps are iconic for survival. They will make great bug-out vehicles and can double as daily-duty vehicles.

    5. Pre-1980 Land Rover – Like the Jeep, Land Rovers have their place in the survival game for a reason. They are efficient and they can handle off-road situations when getting you from point A to point B.

    6. Old tractors.

    or,

and convert it to diesel. I like the KLR option. :bikewhoops:

Your chassis is literally an EM shield, and you can still get low power RF through it (garage door opener). You upgrading to full lead with monitors for windows?

Thanks. I'll research the "EMP Shield" device.
My thought was to have backup "critical components" to ensure operability. I understand the need to protect and the use of old microwave ovens.
Wanted to solicit input on which components on my Tacoma (other than ECM) that should be backed up with replacement. Only concerned with "essential" operability of the Tacoma: running, driving, stopping, 4WD. Not concerned with A/C, radio, etc.
    Thoughts?

No one’s really sure how reliable an EMP attack would even be. Anything from patchy power grid to telecommunications being knocked out, something that would just kill all electronics everywhere seems highly unlikely.

I'm actually curious here and I imagine @Speedytech7 would know the answer right away, what happens if you disconnect the ECU in the 01-04 taco? Will it still start?

If i were concerned id probably find a wrecked one and steal all i could from it, sensors especially. Even outside of an EMP scenario spare parts are useful.

No lol. Dead in the water. The ultimate bug out vehicle in my eyes is a military spec diesel bike. The diesel will last forever and are usually multi fuel. Also small to weave through broken down cars and enough storage to live off of.

How bout an IDI Ford Diesel? Just about all mechanical, in fact I can't think of any electronics in one. I had one for over 10 years and loved it!

What you don't believe those 20 gauge wires can carry the 228,000 amps to be dissipated in a 4" plastic box?

The wires are just for running the LED, the actual protection is wireless.

    Ok. Appreciate the discussion.
My thought is to identify the essential electronic components, protect and replace.
I'm looking for input on the essential electronic components.
    Thanks!
