I use Castrol Edge 5W30 with the oem filter. I get my oil from walmart and filters from my local dealer for $5 a piece. I change it just shy of 5,000 miles.

My local dealer finally joined Toyota's online parts club about a year ago, then added the pick-up at dealer option a few months later. I don't shop around for price anymore on the oil filter, anymore, because he beats even Walmart's price which is pretty good at around $7 around here as well. He indicated to me he can sell at the $4-6 price point because of the volume he is doing. He's right around $20 for the cabin and 4.0L air filter as well.

Free Shipping comes up every so often as well: keep an eye out.

I go to the dealership and buy 6 quarts of OEM 5W-30, an OEM Oil Filter, & Crush Washer. Then I change the oil myself every 2500 miles or so.

I have been challenged of late. I am a religious M1/OEM filter type. I have -85k on an 09. While looking into my looming (imminent) transmission flush, I have been made aware of Idemitsu lubricants. I am thinking of performing my next 4 oil changes with the current Idemidsu 5W30 offering. I DO NOT expect any miracles, as one who follows these types of threads would (LOL). I will, for ENTERTAINMENT purposes post my journey. I will send my most recent oil sample (M1) to Blackstone. I will send subsequents to them (Blackstone) as well. Be warned, this will NOT be quick, as I only put about 5k/year on my truck. This is a project I have been pondering. I do not see any miracles coming. I will let you all know if I proceed. Hovering over the order button... Anyone interested, or just keep it to myself. As stated, no mirracles expected, just for fun with an otherwise unknown oil mfg.

    Thoughts?

I want to know, How do you only put 5000 miles on the truck in a year? I have 2 trucks, On my 2013 F-150 I put 30,000 and my 2005 Tacoma I did at least 15,000.

My truck is NOT a daily driver. I have a company car. The truck has always been a project/secondary vehicle. As stated, If not for fun, then I will say no more. Not for debate going forward.

Wal mart or Amazon brand synthetic 5w30 with the larger OEM filter.

Figure the cheap oil has to adhere to the same industry standards, why pay more for fancy packaging.

I am proposing nothing more than fun and a little extra info on the subject. We all know based upon what we have seen previously that anything will change. That is the point. Fun/entertainment. There is ALOT to learn here and nothing at the same time.
I just do not think anything will be brought forward other than a little bit of knowledge on an otherwise un-tested brand. It is slightly north of what I would be paying for M1, but I want to see what the end result is. Again...just for the fun of it.

Re: Thoughts?. I'll bite: Why are you switching from Mobil-1? You have 85k on your current vehicle, and I would assume you have had no issues (failures) with it, so why the switch to Idemitsu? (Which is also connected to Royal Dutch Shell). I'd especially stick with what has worked when only putting 5,000 miles/year the truck.. In other words: Oil and Filter change every 5 months, with Mobil1.

I usually fill with Mobil1 Full Synthetic Extended Performance or Valvoline. Current mileage: +- 134,000 No oil consumption and the timing chain under the fill-cap looks as good as the one in this thread. Life is Good.

I've owned vehicles in the past that, for some reason, felt different when run on different oils.

The Tacoma is not that way though, so I don't see why changing to Idemitsu oil would do anything that Mobil1 isn't already doing well.

I doubt differences between two oils, if both are the correct weight and viscosity for the engine and meet all other requirements/standards, would show up after just 5,000 miles. It would probably take a significant portion of the truck’s lifetime to gather statistically significant data. Rather than run an experiment with a sample size of one, that would take several years to bear fruit, by which time the oils will probably have new/different additives, why not just read up on comprehensive studies that have been performed with hundreds or thousands of vehicles?
