& just for a comparison, this is what the new one looks like. Take a straight pick tool to the one on the truck. If you hit metal in that crevice, the rubber is gone. Obviously you may see some torn as well. Also, I didn’t see any rubber around the bolt. It was only when I removed it.

    Ha-ha! I don’t know why I said I couldn’t see it. Did I look before I removed the bolt? No….

Unfortunately, the rubber damper part of the pulley eventually rots and fails. The Land Cruiser community is seeing this become more common as the age of the trucks is approaching 25+ years old.

That's what's making me wonder if this would be smart to do as preventive maintenance, even if it looks ok. I've seen how every other piece of rubber on my truck with stress on it has worn out by now. My shop receipts say it was never changed during the two timing belt jobs so far, and that makes sense with it being as expensive as everything else put together (water pump, seals, etc) and a hard sell. It's been 7 years now since the last timing belt job.

Is there any issue running the pulley if the rubber and metal weight have come off?

The puck or balancer weight, it looks like a hockey puck lol will slip right over that crank bolt while it's rotating once it dislodges from that rubber

Hopefully this helps. The piece that’s marked is the puck/weight or maybe that’s the dampener, that’s pictured in @Black97v6MT earlier post. It can separate from the rest of the pulley, which is what happened to him.

I hear you & I’d make it work financially if it wasn’t a part i’d be visiting very often. With a lifetime warranty if I have to exchange it every couple of belt jobs, I’m good with that. This one I bought got good reviews, so I’m not concerned about catastrophic failure in 5,000 miles. I’ll keep an eye on it anyway for a bit, as I would even if it was from Toyota.

While countless folks use it with success, this is why the popular "Schley" holding tool is not a good design. The Toyota tool bolts thru that "hub" and threads into the pulley body lessening the chance of trauma to the hub.
Also of note, the 3.4 pulley is made up of three pieces. An outer pulley ring, the body (fits on crank) and that "hub". The pulley "ring" is also a rubber mounted affair and can be traumatized by holding with a strap or chain wrench. That joint is best seen from the rear of the balancer.

    Hub trauma.

Schley holding tool, bottom, just has the two prongs. Almost like it was designed to rip off that hub.

Outer pulley ring separated from the body. I believe this is a 4cyl that does not have the same hub found on the V6.

    Toyota recommended tools.
It's a hub that bolts firmly thru the balancer hub and into the rear of the pulley body with a bar or "flange holder" for the leverage.
This came as a kit with several size bolts for numerous applications. The "flange holder" is also used by itself to hold driveshaft, gear box and diff flanges.

Aha! That's what that third hole is for. Ironically, being such a curious one, I was going to ask about this later.... Thank you!

Anyone know how we can get checking this part added to belt job post? I imagine there's one in the sticky section....

I am curious if @1997tacomav6 has had any issues with his part coz he got them monster miles!

So far the replacement pulley has been ok for about 170k miles

This is likely a time dependent decay however :notsure:

    Where do you get it?

I saw a bunch of these for sale but they never list the 3.4L as compatible.
