    Hi All,
I got these two errors about 2 weeks ago, brought it to my mechanic ( who worked for Toyota for about 5 years) and he told me the B Solenoid had to be replaced. He added that while we were changing the B solenoid he would change the filter and fluid. I just purchased this Tacoma Oct. 25th and although I have extensive repair notes and receipts I can see no indication that the transmission was ever serviced. It has 207339 on it and it quite sturdy etc. I'm not having any symptoms as such except that two days ago pulling into a drive way, it wouldn't drive in D or any other forward gear. It was in 2D and I changed it to 4H and it drove normally. I think it has something to do with the VSC for some reason.

Question: In researching transmission service etc. many seem to claim that a truck with so many miles should NOT have the transmission fluid changed if there's no record of transmission having been serviced. Is this the case? I truly need your advice here, since my mechanic intends to change the filter and replace the fluid, and before I suggest reusing the old fluid. The appointment is for tomorrow, 12/16, late afternoon.

Thanks in advance for your help and guidance. Thomas

The advice of “not changing the fluid” needs to go away.
Changing the fluid does NOT cause damage.
It will only make existing problems more prevalent.

The damage is done before the fluid change.
And in your case, you have nothing to loose by changing the fluid.
Your transmission is already “broke”. And as said already, the fluid won’t cause any more damage.

    CHANGE THE FLUID.

Anyone that tells you changing the fluid will damage an old transmission.
Is either doing something wrong and causing the damage themselves.
Or they are repeating the ignorance of others.

And to answer “why” some shops won’t change the fluid on high mileage vehicles.
It is because of what I just said. It can make an existing problem “worse”.
A when I say “worse”. More noticeable.
And the shop doesn’t want to be blamed for “damaging” the transmission.
It is all about liability. And nothing to do with causing “damage”.

    Change that fluid.

Wow, what a fabulous response, THANK YOU very much. Luckily, I don't believe the transmission is damaged just need the B sensor replaced. I'm so grateful for your thoroughness of your response. Happy Holidays to you and yours. I will report after I have the truck back. Thomas

The pan has to come off to change the solenoid.
And the fluid comes out with the pan. (before, unless you want a mess)
I don’t know anyone in their right mind that would pour the old used fluid BACK IN the transmission.
    ;);););););)

    See, that was easy.
    The fluid is getting changed.

Yes indeed. I just got freaked when I couldn't confirm if the transmission had ever been serviced. Just my fear, I'm sure, nonetheless, I now am secure in one thing, the fluid has to be changed. Thanks very much for your response. Happy Holiday's.
