Hi everyone, wanting to confirm some suspicions on here before I get to work. Long story short went in some snow today and when engaging the 4x4 the light comes on constant with no buzzer. And the transfer case and ADD engages, I had someone get below to listen and verify. However I noticed my passenger cv axle was all distorted after today and it wasn’t like that before. I’ve replaced cv’s before so I know how to do the install but the passenger one that’s messed up (see below) was installed by a shop about 10 months ago and the truck hasn’t been in 4x4 since the repair. I also personally did the driver side one a year or so ago. I’m thinking they didn’t seat the axle all the way in, or it’s a busted part? Do you think swapping the cv axle will fix it? Does it make sense both tires won’t sound even if the other cv axle is fine? Also the passenger axle wiggles when engaging in 4x4 and the driver side does not. Any input helps. Thanks

The CV looks like it popped out of the tulip joint at some point.
I suppose it’s possible the tulip joint is free spinning inside?
What happens when you place the truck in 4WD and try to spin the passenger wheel.
Does the cv turn at that “bad” joint?

Not sure. I can trouble shoot more tomorrow evening. If it as freely spinning at that bad joint, would that mean the cv axle is bad and everything else 4x4 is possibly good?

Does the front drive shaft spin? Can you tell if the ADD actuator is working?

That CV is messed up. With an open front diff, the power will go to the wheel with the least traction, that being the broken cv in this case

take it out and take a look inside that boot

I plan on doing so next weekend when I have some time. With an open front diff does it make sense that both wheel wouldn’t spin if that passenger cv axle joint is busted?

I had a second to get under there this morning. Seems like I should just have to swap a new cv in. The inner cv axle spun freely separate from the rest, and when i engaged 4x4 the inner cv would not spin.
