No, trying to hire and then keep folks 16 to 24 these days is VERY difficult. One getting a decent applicant and then showing up to the interview not giving a shit if you get the job or not, is frankly too common. We have retired folks out-working the young bucks, sad to see. Also, if we get someone decent, the work ethic really is not there nor do they give a shit about anything. Its odd, but seems to be the norm these days.

Oh my god. I don't know how I ended up here, and I am sorry you're dealing with this nonsense, but good lord is this a HELL of a read.

Did you ever end up hiring the lemon attorneys? I figured all the stuff YOU are dealing with would be what you'd be paying THEM to deal with. Watching for updates on this, now I am invested!

Sorry to say - but you are a shining example of what you already acknowledged. Never buy the first MY.

This is like when the Focuses were blowing engines because the assy plant in (I think) Spain used the Mustang head gaskets which blocked ports that the Focus used and visa versa. Another reason I also tend to buy used instead of new. Especially after 2020, I don't trust many fab shops either. I'd rather wait out someone locally selling some beat to hell sliders/skids on facebook and have them that day instead of dealing with the potential of the company going BK between order and delivery.

It's rough, but we do business with French and German companies. Try talking to them for basically the month of August. One woman was out on maternity leave on top of everyone else just being on holiday. And they don't check their work phone(s), when their out of office comes through on auto response, they MEAN IT.

Prior to covid, about 6 weeks prior - the company I had been with doing 'systems' work said no more work from home was the new policy.

In order to get my lousy severance pay, I had to fly in and train my THREE replacements, all of whom left the company within 6 months.
And of course many of the 'company' is still working from home.
Tag-Tax-and-Title I was coming in around 100k a year - stock options would have kicked in for another smooth 100k but I missed it by 'that-much'...

So I'm skating on so-so-security and glad I took it, considering what is around the corner.

Truck will be paid off in 3-4 months, the house in another 3 years or so.... wife still working with a sweet retirement package coming up.

Work ethic is non existent in todays world, for the up-coming....
In 32 years, Ive NEVER sat down & actually took an actual "required" 15 minute break or a lunch break for that matter...
Sandwich in one hand & air ratchet in the other hand....
    No BS...

I don’t think that’s aspirational, though. I take every break I’m entitled to by union contract because I earned them.

You take the time because it's in your contract, and you got a union backing you up.
A lot of us worked through break-time and lunch and on weekends ( without extra pay ) because it had to get done,
and we could be fired for any or no-reason whatsoever...

Why? They're not paying you anymore, giving you any cookies, or considering you any less-replaceable than any other employee in the same position. Sounds like a miserable way to eat lunch, and you'll never get that time back. You may see it as lazy, while others see these opportunities for breaks as necessary. Some people in this world don't find their identity in their career/job performance. They take these breaks, get paid the same as you, call their families, sit down to eat, find rest, thrive in peace, and are probably happier (generally speaking of course).

I get it, they don't make em like they used to (young workers, that is). Or maybe they do, but these young kids value more important things in life than working their lives away for someone who gives zero shits about them. I think we're both right. Theres alot of young useless mouth breathers walking around, spoiled rotten. Theres also a lot of really smart young workers who do things more efficiently, more cost effectively, and in 1/4 of the time it takes these "old school" fart sniffers to do it, maybe even from home! Times are 'a changin' my friend. Everyone is replaceable, even the best of the best. Take your breaks, use your vacation time, burn a sick day every now and then. Can't take it all with ya.

    I certainly wonder.
It is very-very rare I take my 15-min as well, too busy as a manger. Some or I dare to say most folks, think their company owes them, not the other way around. Maybe I am wrong in my thinking, but I feel lucky to have my job and try hard to do them right.

You're a manager, and you don't understand this concept? Its not entitlement, its working for wages. The employee works, the employer pays. Whether that be monetary currency, medical benefits, retirement, breaks, etc, the concept remains. Theres plenty of laws and regulations to protect this concept, so I'm not sure where the disconnect is.

The founding family of the dealership at one point wanted to clean-up the books & put a cap on future accrued vacation time...
We use to be able to bank it & zero cap.
Everyone cashed-in & made it rain....
I had the largest balance of accrued vacation.....
Rolled all of it into either an ira or my 401k, I dont recall which as it was 25 years ago...
Cuz I rolled it per my cpa / financial advisors suggestion, I didn't have to pay taxes & lose almost half, that was $23k in vacation pay..
The highest # of all the employees....
    We're all wired differently....

I get it, can make memories with the family while im sitting at work all the time...
Who cares if everyone says he was a great worker at your funeral...
    We're all wired differently...

Sounds like it worked out for you. I'm sure all the young cats at the dealership that won't stay for more than a month love hearing the stories of how you cashed out, and how their vacation is capped. Once again, times are 'a changin'. Theres no incentive for these young kids to save their vacation time, and if they don't use it, they lose it. You've made my point for me. You see it as lazy when they take a vacation. They see it as one week's pay (that they worked for) gone if they don't take it.. Guess you guys are just wired different.

Majority of real technicians in the dealers with a true skill set / speciality...
Are strictly commisioned employees, not hourly at all...
If we dont make our minimum hours, we get I think double minimum wage at best...
Never happened to me but if it happens consistently, you're down the road motors...
In an 8 your work day, I can make 0 hours, 2 hours, 30+ hours......
Work doesn't come-in the shop, you get peanuts..
Life as a flat rate, flagging technician.
