So this alternator has one long bolt securing it in the swing cradle it sits in and a shorter screw securing it on the opposite side. The new alternator has a lip sticking out about 1/16” to act as spacer to prevent wobble in the cradle.

The problem is if this lip it is out just a hair too far the alternator is blocked and prevented from seating into the cradle. See picture below.

Question: A mechanic says you can simply tap this lip back a bit into the alternator sleeve so the alternator will drop in to the cradle. Then following with the insertion of the long bolt the lip is forced back out into this space to act as the spacer it is intended for making a solid, tight connection with no wobble.

    Please advise, appreciated. WoodcutterIMG_0060.jpg

Rebuilding seats with leather from furniture and extra padding. Might put leather on the dash and other interior parts.
I always have to bump mine into place.

That should just be a bushing on that lower lip....
Should be able to gently tap the dowel down....should slide thru it..

And thats not a critical moving part......when its locked down....its done

December 16, 2024. Alternator Update- used a ball pin hammer tapping lightly but no movement of the lip was noted. Post by “Control Car” to use a metal file to file it down to fit was the answer with this alternator.

After a few filings and fittings it dropped in as needed, snug with no play. Be sure to test the fit often to prevent removing more metal than needed.

Used a red sharpie to circle the base of the lip so I could better judge how much metal was being removed.

Used a wide , flat metal file that covered across the whole lip so it was even and flat across as I filed and tested for fit.

Oh, if you need to file it down avoid getting metal droppings into the alternator body, just a thought.

Suggest if this problem arises try the gentle tap method first. The alternator you purchased may be designed differently then this particular one.

    Thanks for the advice. Woodcutter

Yeah they're a bit snug and that's a good thing. Mine barely went in but didn't need tweaking. I suggest marking the thread title with "SOLVED," it may seem unimportant but when searching to solve a problem it's always nice to find solved threads.
