A short block for a broken spring? Unless the valve topped the piston, there would be no reason for a short block, only the head. If the valve topped the piston, you'd be needing a long block.

I think you're expecting an awful lot of Toyota (or any manufacturer, really) to warranty a 2017 with 90k on the clock. It's not a failure that's that common.

My recommendation is to take it to a private shop and see if they think pulling the head and lapping the bad valve for a better seal. I wouldn't think that would be terribly expensive. It's not likely that the head would need to be replaced.

Do you know when is the last time the parts relating to the issue has been updated?

Yup. I bought my Tacoma to keep long term, although I wasn’t aware of the cylinder head issue when I bought my Tacoma. Now, even though I love my truck, I got my eye on it. There are some high mileage examples running well, as well as some lower mileage examples having issues similar to what OP has. My truck has 42k miles, so I’m still hoping I’m in the clear.

Not my first rodeo with cylinder head issues though, but they occurred at higher mileages. My friend and I replaced his ‘94 Miata’s cylinder head at 170k (we did it ourselves, not necessarily fun), and my friend and I had to replace our S2000’s cylinder head (‘05 with 150k and ‘06 with 166k respectively, although those can be chalked up to the previous owner not doing valve adjustments on time).

Not trying to normalize it and I wouldn’t want it to happen again, but it happens

It would appear you've been misled..... Or have a vivid imagination.

Take it to a reputable independent shop. There are online sources for getting quotes for a new head so you have a sense of that.

You'll save a lot of $ and aggravation, 'cause Toyota has fulfilled their obligation.

I wouldn’t call a cylinder head failure at 90k miles normal, but it is true that every vehicle is going to develop problems at an older age.

And there’s always going to be some bad apples

    For sure.
And if Toyota declined covering those small things, why would anyone expect them to pickup a fairly uncommon 6-7k repair, again, out of warranty?

@Taco Lemon: What other people wrote. Out of warranty, is out of warranty. If you never bought “extended warranty,” dealer going charge parts, snd labor. If you not having any problems with your Tacoma, no worry about it. Take it to independant shop, if get problems later on.
