... and the relay goes where? The ECU is now doing what the relay used to do.

An ECU has absolutely no connection to the wiper system in the Tacoma - nada. The basic wiper system on our trucks is completely old school electromechanical. The Tacoma delay feature uses electronics for the timing, but it too is not likely a controller. I will be taking that part of it a part someday to have a finer control over the intermittent wipers.

The posts by @jfm may be confusing you, as the vehicle he was working on does involve an ECM, but not our Tacomas.

Revisit post #22 for the complete Tacoma wiper schematic. I can understand not relying on the line drawing provided by the Deutsch company shown in post #14. It has no indications of just what wires to cut, splice and tap into. Need clarification in that regard to continue.

Too bad you are not stationed at Ramstein Air Base, they could easily rectify the communications problems.

Back in the early 90s I added a rain sensor to my 88 Isuzu. I can’t remember who made the part, maybe Directed Electronics since that’s what we sold for alarms and parts I know the automatic head lights were definitely made by them. It was pretty simple wired in front of the wiper motor and interrupted normal vehicle control when on. From what I remember the sensor it self was about 1” x12” piece that taped to the windshield. It worked ok for wipers but all I really used it for was to roll the windows up if I left them down and it started raining. I would think in 35 years someone would be making something better.
