Want to repaint these 3rd gen 5 star 4runner centers…..and just cleaning them a ton of the paint came off (pics before and after just a good bath) Is it best to just lightly sand and smooth whats left of the paint or use something to strip it all off? And anyone have experience with any good plastic primers? First time painting plastic,

Scrub em with comet and a green scuff pad. Degrease with dawn, watered down alcohol or wax and grease cleaner. Color match with a good quality rattle can paint. Few light coats. _ Voila. If it was a bumper or something thats a focal point I use an adhesion promoter. You be good with a scrub and paint for those guys.

i did mine a few years ago. Just cleaned as you did and I think used a solvent as the last cleaning stage. I hit with an etch primer and then did many (like 6-10) light coats of silver rattle can. It's help up well for maybe 3 or 4 years so far.

My bad, I should have added some forward thought to my earlier post,

"obviously if it has a bunch of hard edges and deep lines after the scrub I talked about in an earlier post. You don't paint it you prep some more like the other guys said till you have a good acceptable surface to coat"

Good luck, hope it looks awesome

My full wheel refinish is on its second year and is showing just a few chips from road debris. I would take it all off if you can. Use a gentle paint stripper like citrus strip but test an area first. If you're brave acetone might do it and shouldn't melt the plastic, but test an area first.

As mentioned prep is everything, but I strongly suggest an automotive clear coat over the color (see link for what I used.)
