Hey taco crew, hope yall had a good Xmas. Well mine could've been better. Was out hitting some local pot hole peppered ranch roads yesterday an I went over a cattle guard and slid right for a second and heard a big CLUNK. Pulled over and both fox coilover shocks were broken off the frame at the base of the LCA. What in the F*¿%@! Would cause this to happen? I've read a few posts on others situations. I do have 2.5 spacers each side and Firestone bags above my aal's in the back. But seriously, how could that much side torsion break that kind of steel!? 20241224_122744~2.jpg 20241224_145811.jpg

Do you have a top hat spacer on there?
    Kinda looks like it.

Your shocks broke due to over extending. Running a spacer lift on top of a coilover is a bad idea.

If you are going to "send it" I would recommend limit straps.

Those shocks look heavily corroded and I think your power steering rack is leaking by looking at the wet cv boot.

Heard that, been time for an upgrade for awhile. I installed everything on my own with little experience back in aut 17. Been looking into Bilstein 6112s with 700lb springs. As I've got an arb and winch up front rolling on 285/75/16s. Is that a good set up for coilovers? Also what are limit straps?

I don't run straps on my tow rig, but this doesn't seem any aggressive off-road.

    Tow's like a dream though.

This is how a CO is put together. Look at part #33. That clip is what holds the shock together.

The Bilstein 6112 are a big upgrade from stock, but for not much more you can get a lot better performance and most likely tuned.

I really like King Shocks. Easy to service and parts availability. Getting ahold of King is pretty easy if a tuning issue/problem arises.

ADS makes a really nice shock. I would also look into that company.

Look around. You might find something new. Accutune Offroad has a new shock out. Call them up and see what they have to offer.

Colton @memario1214 with Hotshot Off-road has some good pricing on all sort of different shocks (king/bilstein/fox) Check him out as well.

Hold on. Mabey im reading this wrong.

Wouldn’t the failure for OP be caused by the top hat spacer?

In full compression This would cause the shock itself to act as the bump stop instead of the actual bump stop. Thus leading the failure.

and correct me if I’m wrong but limit straps are only in when the IFS is in full droop not compression.

The shock itself isn’t designed to be a bump stop.

Also OP are you running a top hat spacer?

In his original post he stated 2.5" spacer. He could have bottomed out or topped out.

He should still be running a proper setup.

That spacer caused the shocks to be the compression limiter most likely resulting in the failure. Additionally that isnt corrosion, they have been blown out for a long time. Those are aluminum bodies. Clear case of spacer lift failure. You dont need limit straps on an OEM fitment shock, only custom applications.

    Sliders, 6112's, full skids.
There’s still going to be a decent price differential between 6112’s and a tuned 2.5 from king or fox, I would argue the 6112 actually performs better than any 2.0 shock. Not to mention they need to be rebuilt. Can’t rebuild 6112’s but they last so long it’s a much better set of shocks for a daily driver or the average person who doesn’t want to deal with time consuming rebuilds.

I wish I bought King's solely for the blue color. I have fox elite 2.5's based on Accutune's review. They're still in the box over a year later. :anonymous:

I guess it depends on what you are doing off-road. Most people I would agree don't need straps. If wheels come off the ground by either flexing or spirited driving resulting in air time...you need straps. I've welded and repaired more shock mounts than I care to admit. Might get away with it for a while but it eventually catches up with you. Every year I have to adjust/test my straps due to stretching.

Stacking lifts is never a good thing. No reason to with an adjustable coilover.

I agree with these. The coil over is to long with the spacer on top. This is an issue that has been around since IFS with struts and coil overs has been around. You smashed the shock over and over until they broke. You either need to lower your bump stops (which would be dumb in this case imo) or remove the spacer and lift the truck properly with the coil over and spring.
