Merry Christmas all. Also wanted to say thank you again for the positive feedback on the cutting board and serving tray. They were very much appreciated last night and the cutting board was put to work.

Making a box for a.post office box door for a friend. Finger joints came out a little tight at first, so I recut them and now they are a little loose. Oh well, I'm not starting over, the door fits perfectly. I'll make some filler with glue and walnut sanding dust.

 

Has anybody ever heard that you shouldn’t run pine or walnut through a planer? Pine because of the pine rosin and walnut because of the tannic acid.

 

Walnut never a problem. Super pitchy wood could be a problem I suppose, but I've had no issue with pine, walnut, cedar, oak (tannins!), fir, hemlock, etc.......

 

My desk a page or two back is mostly walnut. Used an planer and joiner without issues.

 

What’s a good resource for free plans? I’m needing to make a corner wardrobe for clothes and some storage. Medium sized footprint overall. Some images I found online are close to what I have in mind. I can wing it as I have in the past, but plans can be nice to follow.

 

Pine might gum up blades after a while. Walnut should be fine if its kiln dried

I can't remember the last time I used pine unless it was for construction framing or trim, lol. Any other hardwood is just fine run through a planer or jointer. Any wood can gum up any blade, look at the sides of your table saw or miter saw blade and I bet you'll see pitch buildup on the sides. That's why they make blade cleaners.

 

Just means you'll need to clean your cutters more often, especially with pine pitch. Not that bad if you are using blades, but a tedious pain if you are using a spiral cutting head.

 

I had mentioned to my dad the other day that I may try making a charcuterie board with wood and epoxy and would like to use his planer. I think the epoxy worried him and he was trying to find any excuse for me to not use it!

 

Yeah, buy your own damn tools! lol.
I never lend mine out either, everytime I do they get damaged, so nope, I don't lend out my tools.

 

Well it is his planer. You could just buy your own if he doesn't want to run epoxy through his. Overall you are better of using a router sled or a drum sander on epoxy, it is really rough on planer blades and cutters and can chunk easier.

 

He’ll never be able to use it again, may as well sell it.

I can’t justify going out and buying a planer that may get used 1 or 2 times. I’ve got 2 sets of blades ordered for his.

 

Thank you, I'll check that out. I will say, I used to have a Kreg jig years ago and it was very handy for pocket hole drilling. It came with various plans and I built them all with great success. Ended up selling the items as time went on.

Box is out of the clamps and first sanding is done. Gaps need filling.
Made up some filler with walnut sanding dust and some tb3 glue.

Forced it into the gaps. And glued the end cap in.

Sanded smooth again.

It's passable, lol.

It'll get a few coats of water based spray satin polyurethane.

 

While the filler on the box was drying I started prepping some stock for the next project.
A few random boards of maple. Pattern traced onto them.

I cut them out of the boards and ran them through the planer.

Cleaned up at 3/4" now I need to retrace the pattern onto the blanks

Filled the dust collector drum again.

This planer makes really long chips. I think a Byrd shellix head will be in its future. They make smaller chips, run quieter, and make it really easy to change the cutters. I already upgraded the jointer.
