I am interested in upgrading to the 4th generation Tacoma but it really has to have certain things for me to want to trade in. Specifically color, manual transmission and some other minor interior items so obviously I will need to travel. Toyota's website is suboptimal.

What website do you use to search for the Tacoma you want(ed)?

Smartpath doesn't give me the option for a manual transmission.

There’s nothing wrong with Toyota’s website using the search inventory and future allocated vehicles coming to specific dealers…

Toyota not having a checkbox option on their site to search for manuals is absolutely asinine, made my search a gigantic pain in the ass.

I ended up finding mine by going on the Toyota site, checking every trim and options box I wanted, loading all the results, and CTRL-F the word "manual". Worked well enough, but it's really stupid that I needed to employ a workaround like that.

Editing this because I checked and wow it looks like they finally added a transmission checkbox for search. Neat!

I usually use autotrader. It’s not always 100% accurate on transmission type but it’s good enough

I was looking for used, but cars.com was my go to. It was better than a lot of others.
Since you’re being particular, why not find a dealer willing to do an allocation order? You can upfront negotiate the markup. It’s pretty easy to calculate the invoice cost and holdbacks/incentives. The dealer knowing he’s going to make X for a simple transaction is often enticing. When contacting the dealerships, look on their staff website and contact the sales manager directly.

Learn to use this link and search the Toyota site in a granular way including extend the radius to 500 mi. Then sort for details.

    I
f you want the best deal and no one abusing your vehicle know a dealer swap might not be best. A dealer allocation trade is different.

FWIW, I'm happy to be over my manual transmission and especially with this new powertrain but we still have a manual transmission in a sportier vehicle. Using the sort options with Kiss My Gritts will also help you know the combinations Toyota is actually building. For example I had to have a long bed. That showed no matter what a dealer might say, I was not going to have it with manual transmissions at least last summer. If another region has a lot of something you want, it ups dealer willingness to swap allocations.

I’d say also consider going to the hosting dealer. I drove over an hour to get my 2018, because they had it and wanted it sold. I flew to DFW to get my current truck because the deal was right and cheaper to add $100 and a long drive home.

9 years ago I used CarsGurus and found the Tacoma I wanted was on my closest Toyota dealers lot. You can search by Manual too.

As Sagebrush mentioned above, I found the CarEdge site very helpful. The only downside to it was that only the built and allocated ones showed up there. I was in the same situation as you re wanting one that was hard to find and ended up having dealership look for what I wanted and attempting to get it allocated to them---- took multiple dealers to find one that wanted to work w/ me, but once found, they just wanted a deposit and eventually found almost exactly what had been requested. The only extra add-on was the mud flaps (which on the 24s at least are not good), but for $60 certainly not a big deal at all. The not-so-popular configurations can be hard to find (at least it was for me). Good luck w/ the search.

Toyota.com is the most accurate. No check box for the manual transmission, ridiculous. I had to set my radius, colors, price and then scroll and look at each one to find the manuals. Worked, I found mine in September this way.

There is for me because I want a manual transmission and there is no option for that.

Hmm, how about that? I've never used 'buyatoyota.com'. I always build it on the website and click inventory. It's similar but not the same and doesn't show manual transmission. Thanks!

FYI, There is no such thing as a long bed manual transmission Tacoma. They never made that option. Just like in the 1st gen (really only 2001-2004), you couldn't purchase a 4 door/crew cab with a manual.
