Is the problem constant? Does it get worse when you hit bumps and potholes? When I was installingy new steering rack, I discovered that the lower steering column had previously collapsed at some point, meaning the splines wouldn't always catch which caused my truck to lurch side to side whenever I hit a bump. In my case, the previous owner at one point had a 2-3" lift and forgot to remove the spacer on the lower column, which caused it to sit in a partially collapsed state.

Did you check the u joints on the intermediate shaft? My 01’ had a seized one under the hood, and a loose one under the dash.
