HELP...I lost. Alternator light went on a week ago. Battery good. Charged every night and drove to work for 3 days waiting to replace Alternator on Saturday. We'll Friday night on the way home completely died. Towed to my house, the tow driver tried jumping so we can park in my driveway and 6" of sparks but still tried to jump...nothing. I replaced the alternator and Battery. Took 2 short trips. Sunday morning a terrible grind at the starter. Replaced starter last night and still grinding. Not sure if pulled on wires to much and loosened something, sparks damaged something, or what. 2007 tacoma prerunner 4.0l 187600 miles. Over 700.00 in and truck still down....uhhhhh!

Small lift, slightly oversized tires, well...
The first thing you should've checked was the cables. They corrode inside the jacket and can cause exactly what you describe.

Good morning O. S. P. The cables are perfect no corrosion either on the old battery or terminals. My gut instinct is something happened either from the alternator damaging the wires, relays, or from the tow driver trying to jump and sparks, or when I had to pull on harness multiple times to remove the alternator. I don't believe in coincidences. 12.5v at the battery and 12.2 at hot on starter. Not sure if that tells you anything. Can't afford to put in the shop and they say pressure plate uhhh. If there are any tests you or anyone can suggest that would be great.

You still have old starter ? If so put back on truck. Clean all connections, battery, cables, starter.....then make sure they are all seated properly then tighten. Then see if it turns over. Once started check charging voltage. Hopefully u only had 1 problem that seemed like multiple problems.

So, we know the alternator was bad...as you were driving on battery power for 2 days. Have you had the battery PROPERLY load tested? Driving using the battery as voltage may have killed it, and it has VOLTS as you see but no AMPS to turn the starter over fast enough hence the grinding. I would start there. Then, looking to see if youre SURE you have the starter properly aligned when you installed the new one AND all the connections are tight.

Hi. A new alternator and battery were installed Saturday didn't trust the battery. The old starter makes the same noise grinding as the new one. Took it to a shop after work today. They think it's the starter. I think it's an electrical issue. Will see $$$

if the old and new starter do the same, Im guessing its a voltage/amperage thing...

Does it crank the motor while making the grinding noise?

Are there any warning indicators on the dash? The only thing between the Alt and battery is the alternator fuse. The connection from the starter to the battery is direct.

I can’t think of what would be causing your issue unless the serp belt was on wrong.

Well apparently it was a defective napa battery. Seems to be fixed...now belt terrible squeal. Just at start up for about 3 seconds. After that no noise at start up until the next morning. Mechanic stated strong starter full amps, a bit of an oil leak, moisture pulleys showing wear. Taking a mental break this weekend then assess the pulleys and brand new belt. Tempted to put the old belt back on just to see(hear)

I have tried to upload a 3 second video of the belt screech. I must be doing something wrong. Only allowing me to take pic. Will keep trying before I have to go to work. Nasty sound. No saying doesn't have an allowed extension. It's mp4.
