Hello Everyone and thx in advance for any replies.
I have a low mileage 2nd generation (2008) base model Tacoma 4wd with a manual transmission that I plan to keep driving long term. I'm wondering if there are any specific parts that might become difficult to source within the next 10-15 years. I did recently have a 2005 Subaru Outback that needed new catalytic converters but was otherwise a very good car with a low mileage engine. I had to retire it because I couldn't find a CA spec replacement for the catalytic converters. I'm hoping I don't end up with the same sort of issue with my Taco because it's such a good truck with many miles left to travel.
I appreciate any opinions on this subject.

I wouldn't worry too much. Statistically the 2nd gen sold over a million trucks and there are anecdotes of folks with over 300,000 miles on the 4.0l V6 and still going strong. Good and consistent maintenance will keep these trucks trucking with minimal invasive maintenance. Also, cat converters are a hot commodity for any vehicles due to the resell value of precious material the thieves steal for which you can install aftermarket cat shield/skid plates that will slow down thieves significantly or deter. I have a skid plate with add on cat plate shields to deter thieves, in addition my truck is lifted for easier access for thieves and haven't had any issues. YMMV.

In my experiance the parts that end up getting hard to find are the computer modules and electrical parts that normally do not fail so there is little aftermarket supply.
For example my 2005 civic the ac control interface feels like the fan speed knob is going to break in the next year, I am having difficulty finding this part oem or aftermarket online, granted I have not bothered to reach out to junkyards yet.

I plan on keeping my 2nd gen another 10-15+ years and am not going to worry about parts availability too much. Anything is liable to change nowadays but in the past Toyota has been really good about providing parts, especially normal wear parts, for their vehicles. Plus, the long production run and popularity of the 2nd gen (and lots of crossover frame and drivetrain parts on the 3rd gen) will not only mean Toyota will produce parts, but that the aftermarket support is and will continue to be strong as well. My mom has had a Subaru in her garage since 1984 and I currently maintain her Forester. It's been my experience that the parts support throughout the years between the two companies is a pretty different experience. During COVID, I couldn't find a Subaru brand oil filter to save my life. I've never had a problem like that with any Toyota I've owned, even during the pandemic.

Anecdote: I was still able to source a replacement HVAC dash bezel for our 1987 4runner in 2013 from a local dealer when we sold it.

i was curious about aftermarket support for tube and plate bumpers and sliders and whatnot, as the newest 2nd gen (2015, which i have) is 10 years old now...hopefully demand dictates that

    good luck, awesome trucks

I have a 4 cylinder and one of the radiator hoses was NLA from Toyota a few years ago. I thought that was pretty strange, but was able to find an OE new one on Ebay from a Toyota dealer. Obviously, there are probably 5 different aftermarket brands available, but I've had nothing but bad luck with Chinese rubber parts, so I wanted OE Toyota.

I appreciate everyone's feedback. I'm feeling confident that I can keep this truck rolling for many years. Happy New Year!!

Random stuff. Oh! and converted to non ADD 4x4.
And remember you can cannibalize parts from the 3g Tacoma, 4/5g 4runner and Lexus gx models.

Thx for the good tip Ricardo13x. It's nice to hear that older Toyota parts will be easier to source than the '05 Suby I had. Between the Suby and my interest in 40+ year old Mercedes diesel at times made me feel like I was up against the ropes when it came to certain components. Keeping the Suby or the Benz as daily drivers became impractical so I sold both of them.
    HNY!!

I'm having problems getting a set of headlights. Dealer prices from $300 to $700 for the exact same thing.

LOL I hope we meet sometime. I like hood skewps and Subarus and California and lesbians and...anyway, dude's asking a question I'd thought about posting as well, I'm not exactly sure how this isn't Tacoma related?

Anyway OP, stuff seems to be in good supply for now..for now. I'd maybe ask the 1st gen guys, that might be a bit of a preview of what's maybe going to go NLA first.

Lol, OP, good question. Luckily, the aftermarket and stock market is pretty strong for our trucks since they sold so many. Wheel bearings and steering racks should be available for a long time.
I had a 98 T-100 that I needed a new speedometer cable for, a few years back. I found one at a local Toyota dealership and when I went to pick it up, the parts guy said, "Wow, haven't seen one of those in a while". I had to laugh about that since everything uses wheel speed sensors now for the traction control and because it's just the latest technology.
I wouldn't sweat it too much, just keep up on your maintenance. I also plan on having my truck ten years from now.

I'm not sure what your immature comment has to do with my legit question? You'd probably get more respect and be a happier person if you refrained from acting like an angry 8th grader

I just think it’s amazing our 2nd gens have been out for almost 20 years since its debut and aging very nicely. :)
